According to information obtained by Digital Information Network, the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has written her name in the mists of time once again, clinching the first position at the recently concluded Huawei ICT National Competition. This follows after their massive victory at the National University Games (NUGA) held at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

It is not an anomaly for universities around the world to lay claim to Alumni who are flying their flags high and making them proud. One notable alumni of the University of Port-Harcourt is the renowned former president of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. He is a Nigerian zoologist and politician who served as the Nigerian president from 2010 to 2015. He meted one of the most commended administrations in the history of Nigeria.

RICHARD NYONG
Richard Nyong is one of Nigeria’s biggest entrepreneurs and a savvy real estate mogul. He obtained his B.Sc. in Economics from the University of Port-Harcourt in 2004. He is the CEO of Lekki Gardens Estates, one of the largest real estate companies in West Africa. Richard Nyong is a formidable force in the Nigerian real estate sector; an incredible entrepreneur who set out to change the landscape of the country’s real estate industry and did it.

Lekki Gardens Estate is responsible for the creation of over 14,000 housing units spread across over four states in Nigeria. He has also created thousands of jobs to the benefit of several Nigerian youths: a great contribution to the battle against unemployment in the nation. He is also a philanthropist who constantly gives back to the society, and was most notably referred to, as a supportive pillar during the Covid-19 pandemic.

His extraordinary showcase of entrepreneurial genius has earned him a well-deserved recognition from his Alma Mata, who felicitated with him during his recent 40th birthday celebration.

AGBANI DAREGO
Agbani Darego is an international model and beauty queen who was crowned Miss World in 2001. She was the first indigenous African to win the Miss World contest. She studied computer and mathematics in Uniport before she launched her modelling career.

Through her years of modelling, she bagged deals with several international brands and renowned agencies. She also appeared on the front pages of countless global magazines. She has acted as a judge in several pageantries including the Miss World pageant in 2004, Miss England in 2002, Mr Scotland in 2002 and the Elite Model Look in 2012 and 2014.

All through her modelling career and till date, she remains one of the few models who have maintained modest appearances thereby setting a suitable example for the younger generation.

ALEX OTTI
Alex Otti is a Nigerian economist, banker, investor, philanthropist and politician. Like Richard Nyong, he obtained a B.Sc. in Economics from the University of Port-Harcourt. He has risen to enviable heights in the Nigerian banking sector. He has held crucial positions in several Nigerian banks including Nigerian International Bank, Intercontinental bank, Societe Bancaire Nigeria Limited, United Bank of Africa (UBA), First Bank Nigeria PLC and Diamond Bank PLC where he functioned as the Group Managing Director. In 2014, he took a voluntary retirement.

Following his contest for the Abia state governorship in 2015, the Court of Appeal declared him the governor of Abia state, a declaration that was eventually overturned by the supreme court.

He is currently a member of the editorial board of one of the most respected newspapers in Nigeria – Thisday, and writes a fortnightly column, every other Monday, titled "Outside The Box".

Timipre Sylva
Hon. Timipre Sylva, a graduate of the department of English, began his political career in 1992 and has served in various political position since then; from serving as a member of the House of Assembly, to being the Special Assistant to the Minister of State for Petroleum in 200. He continued in that position until May 29, 2007 when he won the Bayelsan gubernatorial election and succeeded Goodluck Jonathan.

In August, 2019, he was appointed the Nigerian Cabinet Minister of State for Petroleum Resources. In his current role, Hon. Timipre exudes top leadership performance which has brought about certain achievements including the implementation of downstream deregulation in the petroleum industry which leads to specific benefits including job creation.

Post-Graduate student (Msc.) of the University of Port Harcourt identified as Ronald Ikechukwu Kenneth is set to marry his heartthrob and classmate on the 9th of March, 2024.

Mr. Ronald and his fiancée, Ms. Eloho Juliet Akpojiyovwi are both MSc. students in the department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Management of the University of Port Harcourt.

Our sources told us that both students got admission to study for their Msc in UNIPORT at the same time and are presently rounding up their studies, though they came into Port Harcourt for their programme from different parts of the country. They soon became friends and are already set to walk each other down the aisle.

So I had some things to do at uniport, so I decided to stay in an open seat out Infront of Mandela hostel (if you know uniport well)

So this man was cabashing before I arrived BC I needed to wait for someone while sitting there . So he started praying that some forces have arrived to counter him(that is me) people around were just laughing . Then he went ahead that they're here pressing phone and touching their beards (Nd this is what I was doing). My Experience With A Prayer Warrior Lunatic At Uniport

The management of the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State has banned wild jubilation by students after examinations in the school.

Describing such celebrations as a nuisance, it said a student was nearly killed during one of such wild jubilation recently, Siggy.ng gathered

Jubilation, which some have considered to be wild, is common on university campuses after the conclusion of examinations, particularly among final-year students. Some of their actions include throwing sachet water at one another, dousing one another with buckets of cold waters and tearing or cutting their clothes to make them look like rags.

The university authorities have vowed to punish final-year students who engage in wild jubilation after their examinations going forward.

The university spokesman, Sammy Kpenu in a statement said, “The attention of the University Management has been drawn to the recent wild jubilation on campus that almost claimed the life of a student.

“These jubilations (sic) are mostly carried out by final year students after their final examination. Management views such wild jubilations as an act of nuisance aimed at disturbing the serenity of the academic environment. The act also runs contrary to the extant rules of the University.

“Consequently, the authorities of the University direct the students who engage in wild jubilations by mounting music equipment, rough riding on campus, turning their wears (clothes) into rag, throwing sachet water among other acts should stop henceforth.

“Henceforth, any student found engaging in wild jubilations after examination on campus would be dealt with in accordance with the rules governing the University.

“Deans of Faculty and Heads of Department are advised to strictly monitor the conduct of their Final Year students after their final examination.”

UNIPORT Bans Wild Jubilation By Students After Examinations

Professor Gorgewill Owunari has been announced as the new vice chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt.

The announcement was made on Friday by the Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Port Harcourt, Senator Andrew Uchendu.

Senator Uchendu said Prof. Owunari, from the department of Pharmacology, emerged from twelve other contenders for the top job at the university.

Presenting the new VC to journalists in Port Harcourt, senator Uchendu said “I want to assure all of you that we meticulously complied with the full provisions of the act on the selection of the vice chancellor of the university.

“After interviewing about twelve of them we found three of them appoint-able.

“For the first time in my life I have received a delegation of the President to act on his behalf and on behalf of the president I want to announced to all of us that the council of the university have considered the report of the selection board and approved the appointment of Professor Georgewill Owunari as the 9th vice chancellor of the University of the Port Harcourt”.

Prof. Owunari takes over from Professor Stephen Okududu who was appointed last year on acting capacity.

Addressing journalists after he was announced as the VC, Prof. Owunari promised to carry everyone along during his time in office.

Professor Owunari Emerges New Vc Of Uniport

The Senate has indicted the Nigeria Police Force for allegedly killing a final year student of the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Chinedu Obi, and mandated the police authorities to pay to his family N10m as compensation.

Obi, who was arrested on July 19, 2019 after a disagreement with a female phone seller for alleged assault, died in controversial circumstances in police custody, after being denied access to family members and medical care.

In a petition to the Senate by the counsel to the family, Omemiroro Ogedegbe, disclosed that the deceased went to Otta, Ogun State to visit his friend when he met his untimely death.

While testifying before the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petition, Ogedegbe said the deceased did not resist arrest contrary to police officer’s claim.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Ogbadu Aliyu, claimed that the deceased was arrested, detained and later granted bail and that after his release, he went back to the woman and started beating her and even tried to throw her from a story building.

Aliyu said the deceased, who was rearrested, became violent and tried to demobilise an officer, who shot him on his buttock instead of his legs.

But Ogedegbe, who disagreed with the presentation, stated that the deceased was shot from behind in the right buttock, “which meant that it was not the officer that shot him from behind.

“That all entreaties by the deceased who was in the pool of his own blood to speak with his father were rebuffed by the officers of the NPF who allowed him to die before taking him to Otta General Hospital.

“That the police officers lied as the deceased neither committed an offence, resisted arrest, nor armed at the point of his arrest.”

In the report presented to plenary, Chairman, Senate Committee, Ayo Akinyelure (Ondo Central), said the offence of assault alleged by the phone seller was not a capital offence and should not have led to the suspect’s arrest and handcuff.

He said: “The police officers did not handle the matter professionally and therefore, the force is culpable in the death of Obi.”

The Senate condemned the action of the police for the unprofessional manner it handled the civil matter between the phone seller and the late Obi.

At a session presided over by Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, the lawmakers urged the police to arrest the police officer who shot the late Obi to for prosecution, according to the laws of the land.

Senate Slams N10m Fine On Police For Killing UNIPORT Undergraduate

The University of Port Harcourt shuttle drivers have cried out over the unending ASUU strike across public universities in Nigeria.

ASUU have been on strike for some months now, which has grounded academic activities in public universities across the Nation.

Recall that the ASUU as a body, s had announced a-two month extension to its ongoing strike, accusing the Nigerian government of insensitivity and spreading lies.

The union's nationwide secretariat at the University of Abuja hosted the NEC meeting.

As a result of the strike, students have no other option than to go back to their various homes, which has negatively affected the University’s shuttle drivers.

Some of the drivers who spoke with newsmen in Port Harcourt, expressed displeasure over the continuous ASUU strike which has ‘caused havoc’.

They clearly stated what they are currently passing through as a result of ‘no passengers’.

“As I am now, my house rent is about to expire. I don’t have money currently to renew it because there are no passengers”, one of the drivers said.

Du e to the second wave of the COVID 19 pandemic, the management of University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has found an alternative to the physical Post UTME screening exercise.  The institution is set to begin admission exercise and have screened candidates based on their O’level results by using the grading system.

The result of the screening has been released and candidates can now check their score via the institution’s Post UTME portal:  by entering their username and password to login.  Candidates are expected to check JAMB website via CAPS and the institution’s website regularly for their admission status and accept their admission was given.  
NB: Candidates who registered for the Post UTME with Awaiting Result are to forward scanned copies of their O’level results to the email address: admissiondesk2021@uniport.

UNIPORT Releases Post UTME Screening Result For 2020/21 Admission Exercise

Please is there anyone who can help with information on what to do 8n this case.
I have a close friend who schooled in uniport.
She had a carryover and as a norm was to re-sit the paper. But she failed to meet up with payment tof school fees the next period.
She did it a year later. But she was later told there is missing script on that same paper.

Short tale is, the school has said there is nothing that they can do that the time for her to retake exams with the school has elapsed. Thus meaning she has to defer her graduation.
This is a final yr student has already defended her project n all.

She is very distraught now, but please does anyone know what can be done to remedy this issue?

I Need Advice On Uniport Pls

> Following the suspension of the eight month old strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has announced resumption of academic activities.

This was contained in a circular exclusively obtained by CAMPUS GIST, Friday, entitled “Approved Revised Academic Calendar for 2020/2021 session and 2021/2022 session full time.”

In the circular seen by CAMPUS GIST, all year one ‘B’ students for the 2021/2022 session were asked to resume 16th October, while first semester exams commences 24th to 29th October, 2022.

But that will be after just a one week revision expected to last from 17th to 21st October, 2022. Senate will meet 30th November to consider the semester results.

For the 2020/2021 session, second semester, all old students are to arrive October 30, 2022 while lectures commences 31st October to 22nd December, 2022 (eight weeks).

The institution will observe the Christmas break from 23rd December to 2nd January only to reopen 3rd January, 2023 for one week revision before the commencement of the semester exams.

ASUU Strike: UNIPORT Announces Resumption, Marathon Exams

The sporting activities were held at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) from March 16 to 26, 2022.

Twenty-one games including football, volleyball, basketball, handball, lawn tennis, table tennis, badminton, hockey, cricket, chess, taekwondo, judo, swimming, Karate, strong man, beach volleyball, athletics, squash and boxing among others were competed for.

UNIPORT emerged overall best with 120 medals and went home with the trophy donated by Chairman of MultiChoice Nigeria and Odofin of Ikorodu Kingdom, High Chief Adewunmi Ogunsanya.

The host, UNILAG came second with 86 medals while Nile University, Abuja emerged third after garnering 38 medals.

All the winning schools were excited as they went forward to receive their trophies.

Benson Idahosa University, Edo State also won a trophy as the ‘Best Behaved University’ in recognition of their comportment during the activities.

The Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, at the closing ceremony of NUGA 2022, commended the performance of all the universities; saying Nigerian students are very good.

After putting off the torch, UNILAG handed over the flag to the NUGA President, Prof Stephen Hamafyelto, while he presented it to the University of Jos as the next host of NUGA 2024.

According to Hamafyelto, the competition was the biggest sporting event for university students in Nigeria.

He announced at the close of the event that talents recognised during the competition would be called upon to represent Nigeria at the World University Games in China in June this year. He urged them to continue to train.

UniPort Loses Professor Andrew Efemini 

The Management of the University of Port Harcourt announces the sudden demise of Deputy Vice Chancellor-designate in charge of Academic, Professor Andrew Efemini whose unfortunate death took place on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH).

Speaking when he paid a condolence visit to the family, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill, described Professor Efemini as a man of ideas, whose contributions had assisted the growth of the University. The Vice Chancellor said the exit of Professor Efemini was a personal loss to him.

Professor Efemini was elected as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) at the 459th Senate Meeting (Extra-ordinary) on Wednesday, July 28, 2021. His appointment was awaiting approval by the Governing Council before his untimely demise on Saturday.

He was a Professor of Philosophy of Development in the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Humanities.
He was also former ASUU chairman University of Port Harcourt.

Uniport has offered armnesty programme to all affected students during the former VC's tenure.

That is, all the students that failed out, were suspended, had carry overs and couldn't complete, had no money and dropped out, etc. should go back to school and complete their courses.

But i think they failed to understand what armnesty means because all the students in the above category will need to pay school fees to do anything (it ruled out the financially disabled). Some of them dropped out because their sponsors died.

Why didn't they make it school fees-free for all of them? Or why didn't they just do what UST did under Prof. Fakae? UST just graduated every outstanding student including those that failed or dropped out since the school started (that was indeed a great armnesty).

Some of these people are now facing new conditions that may not warrant them to have the time to be around school environs. The best armnesty would be to just graduate them all with whatever grades they had.

Opinion: UNIPORT Wanted To Do Armnesty But Instead Do This

Gift Kenneth, a student of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), has been sentenced to jail alongside his mother and girlfriend for defrauding an American lady, Lucinda Ann Garnes Henrichson, of around $902,935 (about N371 million).

He and the two others – his mother, Dora Animam, and girlfriend, Spice Chimzi Dandy Igwe – were sentenced by Justice F. A. Olubanjo of the Federal High Court, Asaba, Delta State, on Thursday, July 22, for internet fraud.

A statement by the Head, Media and Publicity, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Wilson Uwujaren said Animam and Igwe were arraigned on one count each by the Benin Zonal office of the commission for offences bordering on impersonation and obtaining by false pretences.

Kenneth was said to have disguised as one Raymond Carl Eric and in 2018 and 2019 lied to Henrichson of Texas, US, about an infrastructural investment project. This was followed by the transfer of the money through various channels – Shuaibu Abdullahi and Dora Animam’s bank accounts.

While Animam was said to have received the money with her Diamond and Access bank accounts. According to the statement, she received $166,000 from Henrichson and N27 million from Abdullahi.

They all pleaded guilty to the charges preferred against them, and Justice Olubanjo convicted and sentenced both Gift Kenneth and his mother, Dora Animam to five years imprisonment or a fine of N3 million each while Spice Chimzi Dandy Igwe was sentenced to two years imprisonment or a fine of N100,000.

A Mercedes Benz 300, Mercedes Benz CL250, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone XX Max, Apple MacBook Pro, two Apple Mac books were said to have been recovered from Kenneth, along with a twin four-bedroomed uncompleted duplex in Asaba.

"Bro we dun late for lectures wetin dy sup na ?" i was becoming infuriated this time around, this would be make it the third time i was calling out to him. 

"Guy chill na make i collect my phone u too dy rush". He replied me almost immediately. I dashed out of the house the moment i sighted sarah coming out of her compound.

Buh it seems she was waiting for somebody so i fastened my pace to meet her. Just a few yard to meeting her i saw her bear hugging a guy from management department. 

I stood there transfixed, you know that moment when something you cherish for came crashing at your door post. I felt i was robbed off something tangible

In a slow pace i turned to meet my roomie james coming towards my direction, " guy e b like say we go trekk reach abuja campus " james said to me. "u dy craze ni ? U wan make i miss my test today?" i replied him.

I went back inside our compound to get my wallet. What i saw inside the wallet go pursue devil instantly if im wan tempt me(swearz).

I dropped back the wallet and collected my legges 507 (trekking shoe) and dash out to meet james so that we wik embark on the journey to school. 

I plugged in my headset and scrolled to my music menu to select my best playlist which featured most of my favourite artiste(oxlade) and clicked on his latest jam (ojuju), his vocals took me to cloud 9, ( still wondering why this guy never collect award for headies).

The rhythms and lyrics of the song were outstanding, i removed my headset immediately i reached udara junction for security reasons. I no wan hear story that touches na normal tradition for us sha(story for another day)

We walked past udara junction and i brought out my phone to check headlines in naijaworld just to while away time as we trek our lives out. The first story caught my attention *Nigerian singer victony got involved in a fatal accident* 

I was curious to know more about what led to the accident just then my phone rang * kola calling* i picked almost immediately just to hear the shock of my life...

Has taken it into his own hands to fix compulsory classes , presentations and practicals for the students . Everyday including Saturdays 

Disregarding the ongoing ASUU strike and UNIPORT directives to shut down academic activities . This has been going on for over a week in secret . As the students were asked to hide to learn and dress casually , sometimes run into the hospital to avoid ASUU taskforce . So what's your take on it

The University of Port Harcourt has announced a ban on “pleasure swimming” at the Olympic size swimming pool in the institution.

This followed the death of a student of the Rivers State University in a swimming pool.

Spokesman of the institution, Sam Kpenu, who made the announcement in a statement on Tuesday, said the facility will only be opened to professionals.

Kpenu, who confirmed the incident, said the 100 level student of the Faculty of Marine Engineering drowned in the pool located at the Abuja campus of UNIPORT.

The student who hailed from Ogun State, was said to have gone with some of his friends to the pool to swim but drowned in the process.

DAILY POST gathered that some police officers who got wind of the incident had arrived the scene and arrested two of his friends for questioning while the corpse had been deposited at the University of Port Harcourt mortuary.

However, when contacted, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police command, Nnamdi Omoni, said the command was not yet aware of the incident.

During the weekend our screens were flooded with images and terrifying story of how a gang of kidnappers who have been terrorising Bayelsa where apprended. Noticeably a particular Ewa John aka Lion (No relative to Beyelsa politician David Lyon) photos were everywhere but during the parade of the parade of the gang, people's attention were drawn to another popular figure within the Iniversity of Port Harcourt Community. 

Innocent Kingsley (in black) fondly called "Dean" is no real Dean but a name giving to him by his clients and neighbors at Choba Campus. His shed is just directly opposite the small gate and close to Ecobank. Under this shed he did typesetting, online works and photography for students and staff alike. 

Mr "Dean" a graduate of Uniport was my neighbor at Aluu where he lived till he moved out late 2019. Early last year we started seeing the guy more at clubs than school with flashy gadgets and he got a nice 1 bed at Aluu with all the trappings a household should have. I was really surprised to see him paraded among kidnappers when he told anyone who cared to ask about the source of his money that he was into hacking. And we believed, some even pleaded to be taught after he bought 2 corrollas once and gave to drivers to use for Uber and give him returns. You need to see the house he is building at Rumuekini.

It was a delight to reconnect with my former school mates from the University of Port Harcourt, forty years after graduation at the ongoing Unique Uniport Class of 1981 Reunion in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State . 

Today was an eventful day as we visited notable sites in Bayelsa like the first oil well in Oloilbiri, Ogbia LGA Bayelsa State the Oil and Gas Park , a visit to our former lecturer Prof. E. J Alagoa,the pioneer Dean of Humanities at the University of Port Harcourt before proceeding to the Palace of King A.J Turner at Opume in Ogbia Kingdom for lunch and cultural fiesta.

Lecturers Protest in UNIPORT Over Non Payment of 22 Month Salaries 

The lecturers of University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) staged a protest over the non-payment of their 22 month salaries. 

The angry lecturers under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) halted the academic activities on campus today. They under the leading of their ASUU chairman Dr. Darlington Uzoma, trooped out en masse from the secretariat of the union to the senate building of the university. 

Uzoma said, “About 20 of our members in UNIPORT are being owed 22 months’ salaries because of the carelessness of the Federal Government through the payment system it adopted.” 

Recall that the deliberate payment of half salaries by the federal government sparked outrage from the ASUU, with each unit being told to take a day to protest. It was learnt that the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and University of Jos (UNIJOS) had both embarked on their respective lecture-free day.

Post Graduate Diploma (PGD): Minimum Duration: Full-time (12 months); Part-time (18 months) Applicants shall be required to have a good University Degree or HND with a minimum of Upper Credit or Higher Diploma in Community Health or its equivalent with at least a Credit pass in the professional examination

MASTERS PROGRAMMES: Minimum Duration: Full-time (12 months); Part-time (24 months). Candidates would be required to have a minimum of a First Degree in Medicine or First Degree in fields related to the programme with at least a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent. Holders of a Post-Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Public Health with a CGPA of 3.50 are also eligible.

The Occupational Medicine Programme is open to only registered medical practitioners. At the same time, the Community Health Programmes are open to only persons registered with the Community Health Practitioners’ Registration Board of Nigeria.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PhD) PROGRAMME: Full-time, minimum duration: 36 months; maximum duration 48 months; Part-time, minimum duration 60 months, maximum duration 72 months. Eligible candidates for these competitive programmes would have completed a Masters Degree in appropriate majors, with a CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale
