The incoming head of the World Trade Organization says getting countries to drop export restrictions on vaccines and medical supplies needed to fight the coronavirus pandemic will be one of her top priorities.
Nigerian economist Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is set to become the WTO's director-general on March 1. She's the first woman and first African to lead the group that governs trade rules between countries.
The pandemic has had a profound impact on global trade, which "dropped precipitously in 2020," Okonjo-Iweala tells NPR's Michel Martin on All Things Considered.

Still she was furious and was talking plenty things that got me annoyed that if it was my car would I have allowed them carry it that wasn't I a man to handle them.

The people said for violating I was going to pay 120k. And I just didn't know what to say. So I was like let's call Baba(her husband ), just to know if he had a connect. And she flared up saying what kinda talk was that and all like I was her baby or something. She said things that got me angry and I told her it's indeed not her fault and I kept quiet. 

In the end I did some transfers and she gave some amount too. 

I have made my decision not to drive her again because I was really hurt with the kind of things she said. And when we were heading home I called her attention to it gently. Yet she was saying why would I have allowed them carry the car that if it was my car nko. And lots of things.

An inspector general's report from the Department of Transportation said U.S. aviation regulators do not understand the plane's flight control software that caused two devastating crashes in 2018 and 2019.
A Lion Air flight crashed off the coast of Indonesia in October 2018, killing all 189 passengers and crew members. A second crash of an Ethiopian Airlines plane occurred in March 2019, killing all 157 people on board.
The 737 Max was grounded for nearly two years. Boeing has since redesigned the aircraft, and the FAA has certified it to return to the skies. But the inspector general concluded the FAA's approach to analyzing the integration of new technology to existing aircraft designs must be improved.
The 63-page report released Wednesday is the product of a review ordered by former Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao.
It recommends 14 changes the FAA must make "to restore confidence." The agency says it agrees with the suggestions and has plans to implement all of them, but indicated it could take five years to do so.
Boeing said in a statement in response to the report, "We have undertaken significant changes to reinforce our safety practices, and we have already made progress on several of the recommendations outlined in the final report."
The report also faulted FAA management for being "too deferential to Boeing," and urged the agency to ensure people tasked with inspecting Boeing are properly independent.
"Some FAA staff cited instances in which they thought FAA managers shared their position during internal meetings, but made decisions in Boeing's favor after discussing with the company," the report said.
The Boeing 737 Max returned to U.S. skies last December. The plane was cleared to fly again in Europe a month later.

The pharmacies were shut in accordance with the provisions of Section C34 of the Counterfeit, Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods Miscellaneous Provision Act of 1999.
The Lagos State government, through the Ministry of Health, said it has shut 16 unregistered pharmacies and patent medicine stores in Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state.
This was contained in a statement released by the spokesperson of the Lagos Ministry of Health, Tokunbo Ogunbanwo.
The exercise was carried out by the Lagos State Taskforce on Counterfeit, Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods, in accordance with the provisions of Section C34 of the Counterfeit, Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods Miscellaneous Provision Act of 1999.
Speaking on the sealing of the stores, the Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, said the affected pharmacies and patent medicine shops were sealed for offences hinged on "operations without licence, engaging unqualified persons to man and dispense drugs to unsuspecting citizens, operating beyond scope through the sale of ethical products and displaying and storing drugs in unconducive environments, which compromises the potency of the drugs, rendering them ineffective."
Mr Abayomi said the state government is combating the sale of fake drugs and illegal drug shops, emphasising that only licensed patent medicine vendors are authorised to sell drug products in their original and approved pack size as produced by the manufacturing companies.
He said the operation of the task force will be intensified "until operators in the sector adhere strictly to the provisions of the law on running of pharmacies and patent medicine shops, in order to safeguard the health of the citizenry."
Also, the Ministry of Health said it has commenced the renovation of general hospitals across the state, in a bid to revamp health facilities.
Mr Abayomi disclosed that two health facilities; Ebute Metta and Harvey Road Health Centres, have been approved for renovation in 2021. He said the renovation would address the issues of design faults, drainage, patient flow, staff flow, water collection, infection prevention compliance or non-compliance, energy and ventilation.
"Mr Governor already knows the state of the General Hospitals and his mandate is that we do a deep refurbishment in all the general hospitals and bring them all to (a) standard that is acceptable - (internationally).
"So, instead of repairing the general hospitals in little pieces every year, we are coming to a number of hospitals every year to do a complete refurbishing so that by the time we finish, it will look like a brand new hospital and we won't need to come back to that hospital for a number of years, and then, we move on every year to refurbish six-seven or eight hospitals; that way in two or three years, we would have covered most of the hospitals in Lagos State," Mr Abayomi said.
The commissioner added that a total of eight hospitals have been earmarked for renovation in 2021, but the exercise will start with two. Lagos State has 27 general hospitals.
He said world-class medical infrastructures and renewable energy like solar, inverters and natural ventilators will be introduced in the hospitals.
"We are trying to keep the hospitals low energy and low carbon footprints. We don't want the Medical Director to spend their IGR on diesel and fueling generators," the commissioner said.
"So, where we can cool a building down naturally and use renewable energy like solar or naturally ventilators or inverters, we would do that, just to bring down the carbon footprints of all our medical infrastructure and reduce the use of fossil fuel, and generally redesign the building or rehabilitate it to be a lot cooler."We are also paying attention to sanitation; toilet, wash hand basins and we are making sure that all the fittings are robust, strong and dependable, so that for five-ten years, none of the replacement will suffer underlying disrepair," he said.

Nigeria's Senate on Wednesday unanimously approved a new anti-corruption chief nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The EFCC investigates and prosecutes corruption in Africa's largest oil exporter and its biggest economy. Bawa will now take charge of a string of high-profile investigations, including into alleged wrongdoing by P&ID, a gas firm with a $10 billion arbitration award that Nigeria is working to overturn.
Bawa told senators that his 16 years at the EFCC had prepared him well for the top job.
"I am versed in the investigation of advance fee fraud, money laundering, public sector corruption and other financial crime-related issues," he said during the confirmation.
Buhari suspended the previous EFCC chief, Ibrahim Magu, last year after allegations that he had diverted funds recovered by the agency into private pockets, charges Magu's lawyer has denied.
Nigeria has struggled for decades with endemic corruption. Last year, the government announced plans to form an agency to manage the money and assets seized domestically or returned from abroad following anti-corruption investigations to prevent further misuse of the assets.

The price tag will go even higher, Blanton told lawmakers on the House Appropriations Committee, if the fence and other security measures are needed beyond March.
In his prepared testimony, Blanton described how his employees tried to minimize the threat to the Capitol and lawmakers on Jan. 6, when thousands of former President Donald Trump's supporters breached security perimeters at the Capitol grounds. Many of them then engaged in a pitched battle with police and security personnel.
"[Architect of the Capitol] employees sheltered congressional staff in their shops to protect them from the roving mob," Blanton said, adding, "Other members of our team raced to the roof to reverse the airflows within the building to help clear the air of chemical irritants, like bear repellents and pepper spray, while more team members rushed bottles of water and eyewash stations to Capitol Police officers in need of assistance."
When the mob thronged the Capitol, the Architect of the Capitol's painters and artisans were laboring to complete the massive task of readying the campus to host a presidential inauguration.
"Over the course of a couple of hours, the hard work of our team was destroyed," Blanton said.
"The [inauguration] platform was wrecked. There was broken glass and other debris. Sound systems and photography equipment was damaged beyond repair or stolen. Two historic Olmsted lanterns were ripped from the ground, and the wet blue paint was tracked all over the historic stone balustrades and Capitol building hallways."
In the Capitol building complex, historical statues, murals and furniture were damaged, mainly from pepper spray accretions and residue from chemical irritants and fire extinguishers, requiring expert cleaning and conservation. Work crews covered gaping holes with plywood and cleared "a small mountain of debris left behind on the west and east fronts," Blanton said.

While most damaged items had to be removed because of safety concerns, he said his staff preserved the panels of the historical Columbus Doors on the east front "for a potential presentation or display."
The brief insurrection brought catastrophe to what had already been a very busy tenure for Blanton, who was sworn in to his job in January 2020. Since then, the Capitol has hosted three lying-in-state or in-honor ceremonies, including for U.S. Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, who died after being injured in the riot.
The high-profile events have come as Blanton and his staff have worked to mitigate coronavirus risks through enhanced cleaning practices and providing protective equipment.
On Wednesday, Blanton said many people on his staff have not yet been vaccinated, despite continuing to work at the Capitol campus — work that has included the intense effort to repair damage from the riot and hold an inauguration.
