How do you develop a good relationship with God? That depends on what you mean by “good relationship.” The Bible has some instructions on how to develop a good relationship with God. For instance, it tells us to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:36-40). However, it also says that trying to earn God’s favor by being good is misguided. “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Even the holiest among us is “an alien and a stranger on the earth” (Ephesians 2:11). A lot of people make the mistake of assuming that God is someone out there who can be manipulated into giving you what you want. This is the wrong approach. God is not a genie, and he won’t give you what you want just because you ask for it. Instead, you have to take your focus off yourself and seek to do God’s will. Start by truly caring about your neighbor, and you will always be rewarded.
