Why Planned Postponement Of School Resumption Must Not Stand

77

The Presidential Task Force earlier today issued a press statement indicating that the earlier fixed date for school resumption being 18th January 2021 might be postponed further due to the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic in the country. These announcement today has come as a rude shock to Nigerian students, most especially in the tertiary institution whom have already lost an academic session due to the pandemic. The continued closure of schools has not only affected the academic prospects of students but have also caused severe depression amongst students most significantly in the Nigerian tertiary institutions according to medical reports. This government has continued to ignore the fact that the rise in mental illness related to the closure of schools is taking on its populace. Also a further postponement of school resumption will evidently jeopardize the source of income of over a million teachers and other workers in the education sector for the month of January. Although the PTF could give themselves some thumbs up for preventing a further spike of cases in schools, but they would definitely keep mute to the the fact that hunger and malnutrition will be ravaging tens of millions of Nigeria homes. To get to the record, the first case of coronavirus in Nigeria was made on 27th February 2020 and we've unfortunately lost about 1,361 persons ever since according to the NCDC, but have we also stressed the point that over a million plus died as a result of Malaria, Tuberculosis, Meningitis, HIV/AIDS, Diabetes, Cardiovascular diseases, Malnutrition and so many more within the same period and no health emergency was declared after all. The point is the further postponement of schools in other to curl the rising cases of Covid must be totally rejected. Safety tips on preventing the transmission of the virus from one person to another is quite enough for every thing sake. #REOPENSCHOOLSNOW
