Top 10 most expensive squads in Europe after Premier League clubs' £7bn spending spree The total cost of Premier League clubs' squads is more than twice as much as those from the rest of Europe's top five leagues following a huge summer transfer window Manchester City and Man Utd top the list of Europe's most expensive squads after Premier League clubs splashed out more than £7billion on their current rosters. This summer's transfer window was one of the most sensational of all them all, with Manchester United securing the return of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi joining PSG. Huge sums have been spent, including City signing Jack Grealish for £100m and Chelsea spending just £2.5m less to prise Romelu Lukaku away from Inter Milan. And there were some potential big deals that didn't come off, such as Real Madrid's rejected bid to land Kylian Mbappe and City's failed pursuit of Harry Kane. Now, figures have emerged which show England's top-flight clubs have spent more than twice as much to assemble their current squads as any of Europe's other major leagues. A report from the CIES Football Observatory found that the total transfer cost of Premier League squads dwarfed that of rosters in Serie A (£2.9bn), La Liga (£2.8bn), Ligue 1 (£2.3bn) and the Bundesliga (£2bn). And it will be no surprise that City and United have the most expensive squads in Europe's top five leagues, boasting stars like Grealish, Kevin de Bruyne (£68m), Paul Pogba (£89m) and Harry Maguire (£80m). City's squad cost £926m, ahead of United's on £877m, with £73m man Jadon Sancho the Red Devils' biggest buy this summer. Paris Saint-Germain are third with £820m, followed by Real Madrid on £675m, with Chelsea's £669m squad in fifth place. Also in the top 10 are Liverpool (£576m), Arsenal (£542m) and Tottenham (£472m), as well as Juventus (£563m) and Barcelona (£551m). Other Premier League clubs in the top 30 include Everton (£400m), Leicester (£352m), Aston Villa (£301m), Wolves (£265m), West Ham (£261m), Newcastle (£237m), Crystal Palace (£206m), Southampton (£192m) and Brighton (£188m). Arsenal spent the most of any Premier League clubs this summer, splashing out £156.8m on young players as Mikel Arteta and Edu try to build for the future at the Emirates. United were the second-biggest spenders with £133.7m laid out on Sancho, Raphael Varane (£41m) and Ronaldo (£19.7m), while City and Chelsea were third and fourth despite both clubs only bringing in one player each with their respective signings of Grealish and Lukaku. Aston Villa were fifth on the list of the top flight's biggest spenders this summer as they ploughed £93m of their Grealish money back into the squad, with their signings including striker Danny Ings and winger Leon Bailey. Top 10 most expensive squads in Europe's top five leagues (according to transfer expenditure, via CIES Football Observatory) 1 Man City (£926m) 2 Man Utd (£877m) 3 Paris Saint-Germain (£820m) 4 Real Madrid (£675m) 5 Chelsea (£669m) 6 Liverpool (£576m) 7 Juventus (£563m) 8 Barcelona (£551m) 9 Arsenal (£542m) 10 Tottenham (£472m)
