It's no longer news that times are hard in Nigeria and that it cuts across virtually every part of the country, with the country experiencing one of its worst inflation rates in recent years. The result of this inflation has seen prices of goods and commodities rose astronomically, with many things which were cheap before now incredibly expensive. Foods and foodstuffs are not exempted from this astronomical as food inflation, according to official sources, rose in May to 22.28%, compared with 22.72% in April 2021. The implication of food inflation has been damning for the common Nigerian especially, as they have been on the brunt receiving end of the anomaly. There have been numerous complaints by many Nigerians as they groan about the increase in the price of food items, especially as the naira seems to have lost its purchasing power. For instance, food items such as garri and beans which about a year ago, were sold for about N200/bowl and N450/bowl respectively are now sold at N450 and N1200/bowl. These are just a few of the many food items whose prices have gone up, with many of them simply becoming out of reach of many common Nigerians. With many Nigerians now left with no choice but to reduce the number of times they eat per day, it could be wise to eat more of certain popular foods. The rationale behind the choice of such foods is that they possess certain qualities which enable them to easily fill up your tummy and satisfy you, hence you tend to consume less of them and may even save money in the long run. Such foods, known as filling foods tend to have four characteristics that are unique to them. These characteristics include being high in protein, having high fibre content, having high water or moisture content, and being low in energy density. It is important to note that we are not saying the foods come cheap, but that by virtue of them containing either one or all the unique characteristics listed above, they can easily fill up your stomach and you will eat fewer foods, than if you eat other types of foods. Below are 6 of such foods: 1. Boiled Potato Cooked, unpeeled potatoes are rich in minerals and vitamins such as potassium and vitamin C respectively. They also have high water content, carbs, as well as moderate fibre and protein content. 2. Eggs Eggs have an incredibly high protein composition contain all nine essential amino acids. They also are incredibly healthy and nutrient-dense and could fill you up easily. 3. Meat Beef, lamb, pork and other lean meats are also very filling as they are high in protein. 4. Vegetables Vegetables have high volume and are great reservoirs of water and their high fibre content will add bulk to your meals, helping you to easily get filled up and reduce how much food you eat. 5. Legumes Legumes such as beans, peas, peanuts and others are loaded with protein and have high fibre content, in addition to having a relatively low energy density. All these characteristics make them an ideal filling food type. 6. Fruits Fruits have low energy density and also contain lots of fibre, which may slow digestion and help you feel full for longer.
