Oprah Winfrey, one of the most influential women in the world today, once proclaimed that “we cannot become what we need to be by remaining what we are.” This statement is undeniably true. In fact, it is a statement that captures one of the unchanging laws of nature. For example, an apple seed, in a small container, has the potential to become an apple tree that will bear apple fruits. We can imagine the joy that comes with eating an apple fruit, with all its nutritional benefits to the body of the consumer. But the fact remains that such an apple tree and its nutritious fruits will never come into existence unless the apple seed in the small container is taken out of the container, planted, and nurtured in the right soil. Likewise, the human person, just like an apple seed, is a bundle of potentials – the potentials to become whatever he or she chooses to be. A human being has the potential to become, for instance, a president, a governor, a movie star, a great singer, a powerful preacher, a professor, a writer, an influential public speaker, etc. But the fact remains that the human person cannot truly actualize all his or her inherent potentials unless these wonderful potentials are consciously developed and used in the right field. We can all imagine how sad it will be to have a handful of apple seeds in a small container but never have them transform into apple trees that will in turn produce abundant apple fruits that will nourish a great number of people from all over the world. Likewise, we all can also imagine how sad it will be for individuals with the potentials to become presidents of countries, governors of states, famous movies stars, great singers, powerful preachers, great professors, great writers, influential public speakers, etc., but never have them become what they were meant to be.
