When the youngster got up, his father—who is said to be the reason behind the deaths—as well as his mother and three brothers were all dead.

Sgt Knight said: “At some point he armed himself with a gun, he shot her multiple times, killing her.

“At that point he systematically went through the home shooting and killing the children.”

When police arrived, he described the scene as “carnage”.

He said: “Make no mistake about it, what happened in that residence was nothing short of a massacre.”

Cops said they do not doubt the boy saying that he slept through the shooting. He called cops shortly after 9.30am.

Sgt Knight said: “The door (to his room) was closed and there was a box fan running. There is no indication he didn’t sleep through it.”

He was not injured and is under the care and custody of relatives.

The family had no previous contact with law enforcement or history of domestic violence, and there had been no police calls to their home, according to Knight.

“It remains a mystery as to what caused Mr Candy to murder his wife and three of his children,” stated a police report.

Similarly, Nnamdi Kanu, designated as a leader of a government-designated terrorist organization, IPOB, was detained by the DSS on national security grounds. 

Despite being charged with treason, terrorism, and illegal possession of firearms, Kanu fled abroad in 2017 after skipping bail, only to be arrested and returned to Nigeria in 2021.

In 2022, an appeal court in Abuja dropped all charges against Kanu and ordered his release, but the federal government appealed. 

The Supreme Court overturned the appeals court ruling on December 15, stating that Kanu faced terrorism charges despite acknowledging rights violations during his arrest and extradition. Kanu remained incarcerated at the year’s end.

The report also highlighted challenges within Nigeria’s judicial system, including a shortage of trial judges, trial backlogs, endemic corruption, bureaucratic inertia, and undue political influence. 

It said delays in cases were exacerbated by logistical issues, such as the need for more vehicles to transport detainees to court and authorities losing case files.

A Kogi State High Court sitting in Lokoja has ordered the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, to appear in court on May 13, 2024, to show cause why an order of committal should not be made against him for allegedly disobeying court order. 

The EFCC boss is facing a contempt charge for carrying out "some acts upon which they (the EFCC) have been restrained" by the Court on February 9, 2024, pending the determination of the substantive Originating Motion. 

Justice I. A. Jamil, delivering a ruling in Suit No: HCL/68M/2024 and Motion No: HCL/190M/2024, ordered that "the said act was carried out by the Respondent (EFCC) in violation of the order, which was valid and subsisting when they carried out the act. That same act of the Respondent amounts to Contempt. 

EFCC operatives had laid siege on the residence of the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, as early as 8am on April 17, 2024, with a bid to arrest him, despite a court order restraining them from taking such action, pending the determination of the Originating Motion. 

Justice Jamil's order was based on a motion ex-parte filed by Yahaya Bello through his lawyer, M.S. Yusuf, Esq, where he prayed the court 
for an order to issue and serve the Respondent (EFCC Chairman) with Form 49 Notice to show cause why Order of committal should not be made on Olukoyede.

Having listened to the arguments of the Applicant's counsel, the submission and exhibits attached in the Written Address, Justice Jamil granted Yahaya Bello's prayers and ordered Olukoyede to be summoned to appear before the court to answer the contempt charge.

Delivering his order on the motion on April 25, 2024, Justice Jamil said, "The applicant's application before me is to the effect that the Respondent has carried out some acts upon which they have been restrained by this Court on the 9th of February, 2024, pending the determination of the substantive motion on Notice before this Court.

"That the said act was carried out by the Respondent in violation of the order which was valid and subsisting when they carried out those acts. That same acts of the Respondent amounts to acts of contempt.

"That the Respondent should be summoned to appear before this Court to answer to the contempt charge.

"It's against the above facts that this Court hereby grants the prayers sought in line with the principle of "Audi Ultra Patem". To wit:

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, will today, 24th of April, lift the previously imposed ban on campaigns. What it means easily is that political parties, supporters and their candidates can officially go about campaigning to the electorates. 

When we talk about meritocracy, I often get the question; who gets to decide who wins? How do we decide who wins? 

For some events, it is easy and straightforward: In a 100 metres race, the winner is always who runs fastest. In javelin throw, the winner is always the person who made the furthest throw, and in a chess game, the winner is the champion. 

Now, let go to more complex endeavours where some form of objective results can be recognized:

To determine the best lawyer, we must look at the amount of cases won or the value of cases won, or even the difficulty level of the cases won like the Late OJ Simpson Case in the 90s in America that blazened the screens of our televisions, and made newspaper headlines around the world.

To determine the best accountant, we would want to see how effective he is about the books and the amount he is able to save for the organization or the client, among others. 

To determine the best enterpreneur, we must look at his Return on Investment, sales, revenue, market share, growth, etc.

To determine the best engineering team, we must look at the size and difficulty of the projects it is handling, the time to complete projects, longevity of the built structures etc.

What all these above have in common is that there are some sort of metrics used to measure them.

Aderemi Adeoye, Commissioner of Police in Anambra, has bowed out of the force after 35 years of meritorious service to the country.

Mr Adeoye pulled out at a colourful ceremony held at the Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, on Saturday but will hand over to a successor on May 1, 2024.

In his speech, the outgoing commissioner of police thanked the Police Force and Nigeria for giving him the opportunity to serve and also for investing in him both at home and abroad while in service.
Mr Adeoye said in the course of service, he served in Niger Delta, where he fought militancy for five years, led the police mobile force in Maiduguri in the fight against Boko Haram for two and half years and also led a combined force against the proscribed IPOB in the five south-east states as a deputy commissioner of police.

According to him, it is to the glory of God that none of these direct confrontations with guns and bombs left a scar on me.

“I thank Nigeria and the police for investing in me and giving me the opportunity to serve,” he said.

Mr Adeoye expressed gratitude to the people of Anambra for their hospitality and love, describing the state as his second home.

He said the less than 2 per cent of the population who took to criminality could not be used to define the people of Anambra as they were hardworking and positive-minded people who did not indulge in idling away their time.

“It has been a unique privilege serving Anambra, serving as CP Anambra as the coronation of my career.

“Anambra people are warm and hospitable, kind and generous; I can never open my mouth to speak ill of Anambra; if I do, God will judge me.

“To the Nigeria Police, Anambra Command, I salute you, my officers are gallant.

“I thank my colleagues in sister security agencies, all these I have said were achieved with their cooperation, I owe this honour to them all,” he said.

In his remark, Governor Chukwuma Soludo said Mr Adeoye came to Anambra and played his role gallantly.

Mr Soludo, who was represented by his deputy, Onyekachukwu Ibezim, said Mr Adeoye led the onslaught as his administration took the war to the insurgents in their camps.

He said the CP came at a time when his administration was tackling the height of insecurity with one-third of the state under the captivity of insurgents.

“If it were in our hands, we would say, let this continue, but there is always a time to come and a time to go.

“For your contributions to the state, a street has been named after you by stakeholders with many awards.

“You are no longer a visitor to Anambra; you are now a citizen,” he said.

Traditional rulers, captains of industry, Yoruba community, Hausa community, women groups and many others took turns to celebrate Mr Adeoye in various ways; he touched their lives in the course of service at a grandiose reception held at the International Convention Centre.

A book, entitled, “X-ray of CP Aderemi Adeoye’s Leadership Principle, Eulogy To A Crime Fighter”, written by Sgt Chioma Obi” was unveiled at the event.

In a legal saga that continues to unfold, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has brought forth a fresh set of charges against Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). 

These charges, filed at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, allege Emefiele's involvement in the unauthorized printing of Naira and other financial irregularities during his tenure.

The EFCC's latest accusation revolves around Emefiele's purported approval of the printing of N684,590,000 at a rate totaling N18.96 billion.

These funds, the commission contends, were printed unlawfully and without due process, constituting a breach of public trust and financial regulations.

According to documents obtained by PUNCH Online, Emefiele is slated to face a new four-count charge before Justice Hamza Muazu. 

The charges include accusations of disobeying legal directives, illegal printing of money, abuse of office, and other offenses allegedly committed during his implementation of the naira swap policy under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The specifics of the charges detail Emefiele's purported violations of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, including instances where he allegedly approved the printing of significant quantities of Naira notes without the requisite approvals from the Central Bank Board and the President of Nigeria.
