I am from a riverine village and ever since I was born, I have noticed that anyone who gets drowned in any of the rivers around my village is usually buried by the side of that particular river where the person got drowned. In fact, it's usually not negotiable. Not only that, most of the victim's belonging like clothes, shoes etc are brought from the victim's house and buried along with the victim. The next day life would continue and one would see children and adults swimming, playing and shouting at the top of their voices in the river. I don't really know why it's is so.

One thing again I noticed is that those of from the villages where the rivers are situated hardly get drowned in these rivers. In fact, to say 'hardly gets drowned' is being economical with the truth. Till today, I have never heard of anyone from my village or other villages that boarder the rivers who got drowned in any of the rivers. It's usually people from the upland villages and distant communities that get drowned in the rivers. In fact, on one occasion, it was one young man from the same community with me, but from one of the upland villages. That very day on my way coming back from the river, he rode recklessly past me on his old bicycle going to the river. After sometime, news began to filter in from the busy river that he got drowned in the river. I was shocked to my marrows to hear that and only told a few people that I saw him going to the river some minutes ago.

The Kebbi State House of Assembly has suspended the member representing Birnin Kebbi North Constituency, Hassan Umar.

Umar was suspended over alleged unguarded utterances against the assembly leadership.

A former aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari Bashir Ahmad has reacted to the suspension of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje at ward level.

Ahmad said the same tactics used in suspending the former APC national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole was implored in Ganduje’s situation.

On Monday, Ganduje was suspended by his ward in DawakinTofa local government area of Kano State over alleged corruption.

The legal adviser of the ward, Haladu Gwanjo, had accused Ganduje of committing gross misconduct and misappropriation of public funds during his administration as Kano State governor.

But Ahmad on his take claimed that if Ganduje’s suspension was conducted in accordance with the party’s laws then he is no longer an APC member.

Posting on X, Ahmad said Ganduje cannot serve as the national chairman since he has been suspended.

Ahmad stated that the current situation is similar to the tactics used during Senator Adams Oshiohmole’s tenure.

He wrote: “If the widely reported suspension of the national chairman of our great party was conducted in accordance with due process, then he is no longer a party member, and constitutionally, he cannot serve as the national chairman since he is not a registered member of the party.

“This situation has a resemblance to the tactics used during Senator Adams Oshiohmole’s tenure. There must have been manoeuvres happening behind the scenes.”

Sand filling is currently ongoing at some portions of Landmark Beach Resort, one of the businesses in Oniru issued a demolition notice due to encroachment on the right of way for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project.

Nairametrics obtained information about the sand filling at the popular beach resort through a video posted on Landmark Africa’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday.

The video shows earthmoving equipment filling parts of the beach. According to the video tweet posted around 9:30 am on Wednesday, the beachfront and the Hard Rock Café section of the resort have almost been completely sand-filled.

“Landmark Beach sand filling happening live this morning 17/04/2024. Beach front, Hard Rock Cafe/Breeze almost gone!,” the post on Landmark Africa X account read.

Landmark Beach Resort is one of several business establishments in Oniru that received a demolition notice from the Lagos State Government because parts of the resort encroached on the right of way of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.
In an effort to protect its business operations, the resort’s management initiated negotiations with both the federal and Lagos State governments to adjust the highway’s route, proposing that it be redirected along the undeveloped median of Water Corporation Road to avoid disrupting the resort’s business.
However, the Minister of Works, in an interview last Thursday on Channels Television, explained that the redesign of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway’s original route, which initially included Water Corporation Road but now incorporates the coastal path affecting establishments like Landmark Beach Resort, is necessary to avoid demolishing extensive infrastructure that is along the initially designed right of ways from many years ago.
Umahi stated that the property owners asked to relocate due to the reclamation of the right of way for the coastal highway project were informed about the alignment of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal road as far back as seven months ago.
The Works Minister also revealed that work on the coastal road had commenced and special accommodation was made for the area surrounding Landmark Beach Resort, giving these establishments additional time to vacate the premises.

President Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministry of Education to formulate necessary modalities for the inclusion of National Open University (NOUN) graduates within the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) framework, particularly those within the service age bracket, as allowed by the law.

The president gave the directive during his presentation at the 13th convocation ceremony of the university on Saturday, April 13, 2024. at the University’s Convocation Arena, Jabi, Abuja.

Represented by Biodun Saliu, Deputy Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), President Tinubu also disclosed the resolution of the longstanding issue regarding the admittance of NOUN law graduates to law schools in the country.

“With the changing demographics of our great nation, the government has recognised the importance of allowing NOUN graduates to participate in the NYSC scheme. 

The president noted that the gathering was not just a celebration of the graduates’ academic successes but also highlighted the crucial role that Open and Distance Education (ODL) has in shaping the nation’s educational framework.

He therefore affirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing ODL to expand access to higher education across the nation, emphasizing that the utilization of ODL is essential for meeting the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“We will continue to do this in order to improve quality, access and affordability.

“Government is, therefore, committed through the Federal Ministry of Education and the NUC to provide the enabling environment to ensure a good delivery of this mode of education in Nigeria,” Tinubu added.

He acknowledged the challenge that many school leavers face in gaining admission to traditional universities and emphasized the necessity for enhanced research in technology at NOUN to accommodate more young school leavers and improve social safety nets for the people.

The president was pleased to note that NOUN has become a central figure in advancing the government’s commitment to achieving educational goals through ICT.

The Nigerian Army has refuted a viral report that it recruited repented Boko Haram members.
Naija News reports that the Army made this known in a statement on Sunday by its spokesman, Onyema Nwachuckwu.

On Thursday, one Hauwakulu Tabra was reported to have been killed by Adamu Muhammad, a soldier she was in a relationship with, at the army barracks in Enugu.

A report on Saturday said two senior military officers alleged that the soldier was a repented Boko Haram member who joined the Civilian Joint Task Force and was later enlisted into the Nigerian Army in 2021.
But according to the statement, the Army said while it is highly regrettable that the lady was killed, the incident should not be used to propagate the claim that the act was committed by a repentant Boko Haram member recruited into the Nigerian Army.

It also condoled with the family of the deceased and reiterated that at no time did it enlist repentant Boko Haram members into its fold “as mischievously insinuated”.

However, the Army stated that at no point in time, either in the past or present enlisted repentant Boko Haram members to its strength.
The statement read: “The NA has at no point in time, either in the past or present enlisted repentant Boko Haram members to its strength. However, considerations were given to Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) who in the fight against terrorism and insurgency in the North East distinguished themselves morally and patriotically.

“Such members of the CJTF must have also shown commitment, dedication and loyalty to the service and the nation.

“The sad incident of the gruesome murder of Miss Hauwakulu Tabra by Private Adamu Muhammad occurred on the night of Thursday 11 April 2024 and her corpse was discovered within the barracks on Friday 12 April 2024.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the late Hauwakulu Tabra was actually murdered by the said soldier, who is presently in detention for further investigation to unravel the motive behind his actions.

“The general public should be rest assured that justice will be served, as the NA will not condone any unprofessional conduct or indiscipline within its ranks.”

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, was nominated by the Federal Government to lead the Nigerian delegation to the Biennale Arte 2024 due to his government’s landmark successes in promoting the State’s rich cultural assets, arts, and heritage and advancing the economic potential of tourism in Edo State and Nigeria.

The governor is expected to be in the Veneto region of Italy from tomorrow, Tuesday 16th to 18th April 2024, and will be serving as the Commissioner of the Nigerian Pavilion at the 60th International Art Exhibition (Biennale Arte) organized by La Biennale di Venezia.

In a letter to the organisers and the Italian Government to nominate Governor Obaseki as the Commissioner of the Nigerian Pavilion and leader of the country’s delegation to the art festival which is one of the world’s most prestigious cultural art exhibitions, the Federal Government said Obaseki’s bold and transformative reforms in Edo’s arts and culture sector is in line with its quest to revitalize the cultural sector as the main revenue generator for the country.

The letter reads, “We would like to propose Edo State Government as the Commissioner for the Nigerian Pavilion and would like to respectfully put forward Governor Godwin Obaseki from the Edo State Government to be the Commissioner of the Nigerian Pavilion at the Biennale Arte 2024.

“Edo State and its capital city, Benin City, have been a main heritage, cultural artistic hub in Nigeria for centuries, and Governor Obaseki has a strong desire to support arts and culture.

“In support of this centuries-old arts and culture tradition, the government of Edo State is planning to develop a cultural district in the centre of Benin City. The Cultural Hub is intended to span a large expanse of land that will bring in new structures and also accommodate existing ones such as the National Museum Benin City.

“The development of the Cultural District is intended to expand the cultural and creative industries to attract tourists to the country.”

His magnetic presence and inspirational sermons transcend borders, earning him recognition as a sought-after speaker at various religious gatherings worldwide.

Currently serving as the RCCG Youth Evangelist and National Youth President, Pastor Daniel spearheads numerous initiatives aimed at empowering the youth.
