The National Examinations Council (NECO) has announced June 1, 2024, as the new date for the conduct of this year’s National Common Entrance Examination into Federal Government Colleges and May 25, 2024, for the Federal Government Academy, Suleja. 

The examination body, which made this known in a statement signed by its acting director, Directorate of Information and Digital Communication, Mr. Azeez Sani, on Tuesday, said the rescheduling of the exam was a result of poor enrolment recorded. 

While saying registration of candidates will continue until the new dates for the examination, NECO called on candidates and other relevant stakeholders to take note of the new exam date. 

The statement reads in full : “The National Examinations Council (NECO) has rescheduled the 2024, National Common Entrance Examination into Federal Unity Colleges and the Entrance Examination into Federal Government Academy, Suleja,

The National Common Entrance Examination which was earlier scheduled to hold on 20th April, 2024, will now hold on 1 June, 2024.

Also, the Entrance Examination for Gifted and Talented Children into Federal Government Academy, Suleja earlier scheduled to hold on 4th May, 2024 will now hold on 25th May, 2024.

The rescheduling of the two examinations was due to low enrolment of candidates.

Zacchaeus Adangor has tendered his resignation as commissioner following his redeployment to another ministry by Governor Sim Fubara. 

Adangor, who previously served as the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General of Rivers State, was reassigned to Commissioner of Special Duties in the Governor’s Office.

In his resignation letter, Adangor, known for his close ties to former governor Nyesom Wike, voiced his grievances against Governor Fubara, accusing him of interfering with the execution of his duties as the Attorney General of the state. 

In a letter to the Secretary of the Rivers State Government, Tammy Danagogo, on Wednesday, Adangor rejected the deployment and resigned from the Rivers Executive Council, effective April 24, 2024.

He said he chose to leave the government to preserve his reputation.

His words, “The Governor of Rivers State had in the past couple of weeks willfully interfered with the performance of my duties as the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice.

“I wish to state for the record that I am no longer willing to continue to serve in the administration of His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, Governor of Rivers State, in any capacity whatsoever.

“It is important to mention that the Governor of Rivers State had in the past couple of weeks willfully interfered with the performance of my duties as the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Rivers State, by directing me not to defend, oppose, or appear in suits insinuated against the Honourable Attorney-General and the Government of Rivers State by persons admittedly hired and sponsored by the Government of Rivers State.”

The Honourable Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has congratulated Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) on assuming the presidency of the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) for 2024, describing the development as well-deserved. 

The Minister rejoiced with the University when the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, recently led a five-member delegation on a courtesy visit to the Federal Ministry of Education where he briefed the Minister on the institution’s sustainability plans and other development efforts. 

ABU’s selection as the 2024 IIOE Rotating Presidency Unit was announced during the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) Global Partners Summit held at Shenzhen, China from 7th – 9th December, 2023. The institution now takes over from University Putra Malaysia (UPM) as the IIOE rotating presidency unit for the year 2024. 

With its assumption of the IIOE presidency, ABU is expected to closely collaborate with UNESCO-ICHEI and IIOE secretariat by providing strategic guidance and support for the development of IIOE and digital transformation of higher education in various regions. 

Apparently elated over the remarkable feat as academic life is fast becoming virtual globally, the Minister urged ABU to take advantage of the position to further promote online education in Nigeria and Africa. 

Prof. Mamman stressed that bringing technology to Nigeria for enhancing tertiary education remained a major focus of the Federal Government, saying that any effort towards achieving that objective would highly be encouraged. 

He disclosed that the Honourable Minister of Science and Technology told him on the sideline of one of the Federal Executive Council meetings that the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology would help Nigerian public universities and other tertiary institutions develop their curriculum for the attainment of technological advancement. 

While pledging his Ministry’s support towards enhancing teaching, research and community service, the minister stressed that universities should not wait for industry to come to them but rather they should go to them for research and other practical training. 

The IIOE rotating presidency unit plays a crucial role in the governance structure of IIOE and it has been in place since its inception in 2019, rotating annually among partner universities in different regions. 

Since the launch of IIOE in 2019, four IIOE partner universities have successfully served as the rotating presidency unit. 

These institutions are Ain Shams University, Egypt (2020); University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan (2021); University of Nairobi, Kenya (2022); and Universiti Putra Malaysia (2023).

Living to his billing as the epitome of compassion, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, on arrival from an official engagement in Abuja, this afternoon drove straight to the family compound of the late Nollywood make- up artist. Abigail Edith Frederick, in Ikot Udoma, Eket Local Government Area, where he consoled the bereaved family.

Showing deep emotions, Governor Eno, sat with the grieving family members and told them he feels their pain.

“This is deeply unfortunate, a young girl, 24 years old, who, finished her Youth Service just last year, and decided to pursue her passion. 

“This is a reflection of our Arise spirit. It shows that our young people are willing to go out there, not begging, not waiting for handouts, but to pursue their passions. 

“It is sad and unfortunate that her life ended the way it did. 

“Once I was fully briefed, I decided to come here personally with the full complement of Government to console and encourage the family.

“You are not just the Governor when people are celebrating. In times and moments like this, you become the Mourner- in-Chief and give them hope. 

“I trust the Holy Spirit will perfect the hope in their lives.

“Coming here means we care. You know Akwa Ibomites are like Americans. We don’t leave each other behind. Government will be with the family and support them.”

The Governor thereafter gave an automatic employment in the State Civil Service to the surviving elder sister of the deceased, and directed the SSA on Humanitarian Services, Umo Ekpo to renovate the family house and bring it to modern standards. 

The Governor also assured of Government’s assistance to the two sisters of the bereaved who are undergraduates at the University of Uyo, said to be sponsored by the late Nollywood make- up artist.

Two individuals who have been planting improvised explosive devices (IEDs) for Boko Haram, 13-year-old Bana Modu and 19-year-old Abubakar Mohammed (alias Garba), have surrendered themselves, according to Sector 3 of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF).

According to the Chief Military Public Information-Ndjamena, Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Abdullahi said the surrender took place on Sunday in Monguno Government Area of Borno State.

He said it marked a notable success in the ongoing campaign to dismantle Boko Haram operations in the region.

He said, “During a preliminary investigation, Mohammed and Modu revealed they had been ordered to plant IEDs along roads, Doron Baga and Fish Dam in Baga, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.

“Instead of carrying out their mission, they decided to abandon their task, escape with the IEDs and surrender to the MNJTF. Their decision was influenced by the MNJTF recently concluded Operation NASHRUL SALAM, a non-kinetic operation and sector’s personal engagement strategy with relevant sources, showcasing the effectiveness of psychological operations in the fight against terrorism.

“Items recovered from them include two IEDs, two mobile phones, and a sum of N53,000 only from Mohammed and Modu.

“This development underscores the MNJTF’s commitment to encouraging other terrorists hiding in the Lake Chad islands to come out, surrender and lay down their arms, in a bid to achieve sustainable peace in the region.”

Col. Abdullahi reiterated that the MNJTF remained dedicated to its mission of restoring peace and normalcy to the Lake Chad Basin.

Though these two meanings appear different, they actually both have semantic connection.

At the very center of ‘judging’ is the concept of ‘separating’ the truth from untruths, the wheat from the chaff, (the head from the body), etc.

Thus, ‘àdá’ literally signifies “the splitter”. The royal significance of this is therefore that:

The possession of this emblem by a royal does confer on them certain authority to pronounce judgements — including that of life and death.

This Àdá has, for this reason, been translated by some as “Sword of Justice”. See Frame-3.

It is only in Yoruba language that ‘àdá’ finds its literal and etymological derivation which also aligns with the royal significance of the object.

The archaeological evidence of the Ifẹ̀ roots of the royal Àdá consist of a classical-era carving of a royal Àdá on a living-rock at Agídí site, Ifẹ̀.

The main key to surviving imprisonment is mental strength and courage.

The prison wall only breaks those who are not driven by strong convictions.

For a freedom fighter, it is a training ground. No true activist goes to prison and comes out weaker. They always come out stronger and bolder. History shows this clearly. Any activist that is broken by imprisonment is a pretender.

If you are all about the ‘soft life’, and you are the fragile type and incapable of enduring physical discomfiture, you should avoid imprisonment.

Some of us came out stronger after our imprisonment because we have always been mentally prepared for it and due to our strong ideological disposition.

Bobrisky will be confronted by a culture shock when he enters Ikoyi Prison and realizes that it is a different world from what he knows.

After a few days, he will begin to adjust to his new world. 

Money can only ameliorate the hardship there, but it will not shield him from the daily problems and inconveniences of the prison environment.

This is when he will know who his true friends are. When I was jailed for one month, reality dawn on me that some people who I thought were sympathetic to my cause, actually celebrated my detention. How my enemies felt about it was irrelevant.

Unluckily for my unfriendly friends and foes, my spirit was free and liberated. My physical restriction didn’t break me at all. I actually added weight in prison and enjoyed long hours of sleep which I never had before and after my one month imprisonment.

Most Nigerians have a wrong perception of the prison system. The idea that the prison is where only criminals are kept is baseless. If I didn’t experience it, I would not have known how deeply flawed and broken our criminal justice system is.

Many people in prison are innocent or just victims of circumstances. But there are also hardened criminals there. Sadly, the current system does little or nothing to reform inmates.

Ugezu J. Ugezu a well-known figure is a Nigerian director, screenwriter, producer, actor, Highlife composer, and singer was born on 19, October 1970 into the family of Mr. and Mrs. Ugezu in Enugwu Ukwu, a large town in Anambra state. Fresh from hosting the Muslim community in Akwa Ibom State at Iftar, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has joined other leaders in felicitating Muslim faithful on the occasion of Eid-el-Fitr. 

In a message released by his Chief Press Secretary, Ekerete Udoh, Governor Eno, felicitated the Muslim faithful for “the successful completion of the Ramadan fast. Ramadan is a period of sacrifice, sober reflection and the strengthening of faith and fidelity to God. 

“On behalf of the Government and people of our dear State, I join our President and Commander- In- Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and indeed the entire Muslim world in celebrating the Eid-el-Fitr

Uproar As NSCDC Allegedly Shoots Woman At Eid Prayer Ground In Gasau

There was pandemonium in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, on Wednesday, as personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) allegedly shot and killed a woman while attempting to pursue hoodlums.

The tragic incident, which occurred while Muslim faithful gathered to observe Eid prayer, has sparked outrage and unrest among residents, leading to an escalation of tensions in the area.

An eyewitness narrated that the NSCDC personnel, in their pursuit of suspected hoodlums armed with dangerous weapons, opened fire indiscriminately, resulting in the tragic death of an innocent woman.

In response to the shooting, an angry mob gathered and vented their frustration by setting ablaze an NSCDC vehicle.

Confirming the incident to Channels Television via a telephone conversation, the police spokesperson in Zamfara State, ASP Yazid Abubakar, said two NSCDC personnel linked with the shooting are currently in the custody of the police.

He said the Zamfara State Police Command has started a probe into the cause of the incident.

“We have two of them in our custody as we speak now. The command is still investigating the incident.”

When contacted, the Spokesperson for the NSCDC in Zamfara State, Ikor Oche, denied the allegation that the men of the Civil Defence shot the victim.

He said the personnel of the Corps were at their post, observing the movement of the Muslim faithful who were out to observe the Eid prayer when they heard the gunshot.

According to him, they mobilised to the scene where they met a woman fatally injured.

“Because they were the ones close to the scene, a mob descended on them. They had to run for their safety and abandoned their Hilux vehicle. The vehicle was set ablaze by the mob and about seven of our men were injured. They did not shoot or kill anybody.”

Oche said the state command of NSCDC has also launched an investigation to unravel the cause of the incident.

Meanwhile, policemen dispersed the mob who vandalised and burnt the vehicle of the Civil Defence and normalcy was returned in the area.
