While Bishara graduated with a degree in social work, Pogu earned her degree in legal studies and graduated on April 30.

Recounting how they escaped from the terrorists after being kidnapped alongside 276 schoolgirls, the duo said they escaped by jumping off the truck while being driven away from their community by the terrorists. 

Recounting their ordeal, Bishara told GMA3; 

“I remember thinking about what my mum would do at that moment then I prayed. I just remembered a voice in my head saying ‘jump out’. I knew I was going to die either way. I chose to die and that was how I jumped out."

On how she felt the day she graduated, Bishara said; 

“It was awesome, I felt great. I remember being told that I wasn’t going to be able to finish high school; that I was dumb. I never gave up or listened to all the negative talks. It was exciting to walk on that stage after being told ‘you can’t do it’.”

Pogu who also shared her story, said she had decided against going back to school after her escape until she was contacted by the US embassy.

Narrating how things turned around her, she added; 

“I’m now trying to get my masters in human services and going back to law school when I’m done with my masters."

Tunisia ordered a partial lockdown from Sunday for the week-long Eid al-Fitr holidays, warning that any further increase in coronavirus infections could overwhelm specialist care facilities.
Announcing the measure on Friday, Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi said Tunisia was going through “the worst health crisis in its history”.
Mosques, markets and non-essential businesses will be closed under the new restrictions, which come as Muslims mark the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan, Mechichi told reporters.
“Health institutions are at risk of collapse,” Mechichi said, adding that medics were stretched to the limit, with around 100 people a day dying of Covid-19.
More than 500 people are currently in intensive care, an unprecedented number that has required medics to set up field hospitals, and the North African country is struggling to meet the demand for oxygen.
Under new rules, travel will be banned between regions, gatherings and celebrations prohibited, and a 7:00 pm to 5:00 am curfew imposed.
Tunisians are encouraged to leave their homes only for what is strictly necessary, government spokeswoman Hasna Ben Slimane said.
The Mediterranean country, with a population of around 12 million, has recorded more than 300,000 coronavirus cases and over 11,200 deaths.
Tunisia’s economy has lurched from one crisis to another since the country’s 2011 revolution, with GDP estimated to have contracted by a record 8.2 percent last year.
Mechichi had said several times in recent weeks that Tunisia is unable to afford to repeat the restrictions put in place in March 2020 at the start of the pandemic.

Nigeria is trapped in severe insecurity. The country is the third most terrorised country in the world, after Afghanistan and Iran, according to the 2020 Global Terrorism Index. War-torn Somalia and Syria have better ranking than Nigeria on the index. The country is also grappling with an acute economic challenge. To highlight the dire situation, about 40% of Nigerians are extremely poor, according to data by the National Bureau of Statistics. Inflation is in double digit. And the naira has continued to devalue.
How did Nigeria’s economy and society collapse so quickly? What tragedy dragged us quickly down?
The catastrophe is, in actual fact, not a sudden plunge; it is the result of a continuous slip, like in most of the countries in the Sahel and the West African region. These countries have been unable to successfully address the political crises originating in the incomplete resolution of their nationality, state, and religion challenges. Like Nigeria, Guinea, Mali, and Chad boil partly due to the burden of history. The ugly historical legacy is now worsened by transactional leadership that focuses on consolidating power rather than entrenching democratic accountability and empowering the citizens. Nigeria epitomises this disastrous model of governance.
Since 2015, there has been a steady decline in the country’s political and economic stability. Long before the COVID-19 pandemic, the Nigerian economy had started a rapid decline. In 2016, Nigeria entered into recession and could not fully stabilise before the economic headwinds of COVID-19 caused another horrendous recession in 2020. In response, the government came up with the Nigeria Economic Sustainability Plan, which relies heavily on significant upgrade of infrastructure and its trickle-down effects on poverty and aggregate consumption.
The NESP presumes a stable political environment. But with the state of the polity, the fundamentals of the plan are no longer realistic. Boko Haram’s increased insurgency in the North-East and the spread of banditry and kidnapping across the major states of the North-West and the North-Central Nigeria have imperilled agriculture and food supply. Targeted attacks against law enforcement institutions and facilities in the South-East have given a dangerous twist to insecurity in the country.
In 2020, Nigeria ranked 98 out of 107 countries on the Global Nutrition Index. Given the economic disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and rising inflation resulting from drought and insecurity in the north, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations estimates severe starvation is looming in Nigeria.
As Nigeria moves closer to a definitive general election in 2023 with the hope of replacing the highly disappointing regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), the lack of political will to undertake radical changes to the country’s political economy means the security and economic crises would worsen, potentially leading to a disastrous political fallout.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s administrative state is very weak, which means that the instruments of regulating economic and social transactions are underdeveloped. To compound the issue, the politics of economic rent and extraction has weakened the middle class and made elite consensus difficult to forge. Therefore, kickstarting economic growth as well as ensuring equity and justice will continue to challenge the current regime.
If the elite cannot agree on basic structures of their society, especially those that relate to social justice and fairness, then the political stability needed for economic progress will be jeopardised. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who chaired the committee that produced the NESP, has hinted at the danger of vanishing elite consensus and the need to rebuild trust in government in order to raise social capital amongst Nigerians. However, the incompetent and biased policies of the government constitute an obstacle to his recommendations.
The Chandler Institute of Governance rating has newly highlighted the fact that Nigeria is in a governance quandary. The country is rated the third worst governed country in the world, just ahead of Zimbabwe and Venezuela. The 2021 report says Nigeria is poor in governance, leadership, and foresight, and that the country’s leadership lacks the ability to innovate and develop long-term vision. Under the government that came into office on the promise to decisively fight corruption, the country is also found wanting in strict enforcement of anti-graft measures.
The foregoing indicates that the most formidable challenge to achieving the economic sustainability plan is not the continuing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Rather, Nigeria’s failing governance is the major threat to its economic sustainability.
The prognosis is dire under the current governance scenario. If more and more Nigerians continue to become poorer and poorer, banditry and insurgence will increase. This will further fray national cohesion and drive a highly contentious political manoeuvring, which would further erode political stability, economic productivity, and poverty alleviation.
The way out of this gloomy scenario is simple: Nigeria’s best economic revival plan is actually effective and radical political reform.

Some Northern States Governors of the All Progressive Congress (APC) are allegedly holding secret meetings with President Muhammadu Buhari in a bid to stop Benue state governor Samuel Ortom in his plans to from armed vigilante groups in the state.

A source well aware of the development who spoke with Daybreak newspaper revealed that many states governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in some northern state are not comfortable with the community policing security arrangement of the Benue state government and have risen up against it on grounds that it is against the constitution and an attempt to from a parallel security outfit in Benue state.

Daybreak recalls that Thursday last week the Benue State Government, had approved the establishment of vigilante groups to combat the high rate of insecurity in the state.

Governor Samuel Ortom while briefing journalists in Makurdi on the outcome of the expanded stakeholders’ meeting held at the new banquet hall of the Government House said renewed attacks on the people by armed herdsmen had overstretched security agencies, noting that the state government had decided to enforce “the law to provide for the establishment of community volunteer guards (vigilantes).”

He said the vigilantes would be constituted from the community to local government levels to complement the operations of conventional security agencies across the state.

Ortom explained that the recruitment process would commence immediately, adding that those to be recruited would be within the age range of 18 to 50 and mostly ex-service men.

“Those to be recruited are ex-service men and people from 18 to 50 years, and they must have stable sources of income and must have lived in their respective communities for a minimum of six years and they must be of impeccable characters and be loyal. All the vigilantes must carry weapons that are licensed so that anytime there is external aggression, they must be able to rise up to defend themselves.” Ortom had said

He said the vigilantes would have the full support of the state government with logistics as provided in the law, adding that the recruitment of personnel would be carried out in the 23 local government areas of the state.

Our source revealed that an APC governor of a Northwestern state that has been in the news recently for the spate of students kidnapping besetting his state is spear heading the opposition against Ortom and championing the anti Ortom security plans.

The dependable source revealed that the Governor zoomed out of his state on Saturday for Abuja at the heat of an APC primary election crises in his state, to seek audience with the president alongside some other APC governors.

The plans of the governors according to our source is to persuade president Buhari to move against Ortom by making him see that Ortom is in breach of the constitutional with his plans to arm vigilantes across the Benue state.

Israel has launched air strikes against militant targets in the Gaza Strip, after rockets were fired from the territory towards Jerusalem.

The Hamas-run Palestinian health ministry in Gaza said 20 people, including children, had died in the strikes.

In Jerusalem, the rocket fire caused Israel's parliament to be evacuated as sirens sounded.

Tensions between Israel and the Palestinians spiralled in recent days.

Gaza's Hamas rulers had threatened to strike after hundreds of Palestinians were injured in clashes with Israeli police in Jerusalem on Monday.

Israel said it had killed at least three Hamas militants. "We have started, and I repeat started, to attack military targets in Gaza," Israeli military spokesman Lt Col Jonathan Conricus told reporters.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Hamas had "crossed a red line" and that Israel would respond "with great force".

The past few days have seen the worst violence in Jerusalem for years, with more than 300 Palestinians wounded in confrontations with Israeli police outside the al-Aqsa mosque on Monday.

A planned march by Israeli nationalists which was due to pass through Muslim areas of East Jerusalem's Old City was called off over fears it could stoke unrest.

The Jerusalem Day event marks Israel's capture of East Jerusalem - home to the Old City and its holy sites - in 1967, and usually sees hundreds of flag-waving Israeli youth make their way through the Muslim Quarter via Damascus Gate, chanting and singing patriotic songs.

It is regarded by many Palestinians as a deliberate provocation. This year's march would also have taken place in the final days of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
