In the annals of representation in Enugu East/Isi Uzo Federal Constituency in particular and the whole of Enugu State in general, nobody has given the state a national visibility in the past 20 years up to one tenth of what Prof. Paul Sunday Nnamchi has done in less than one year of his inauguration as a member of the Federal House of Representatives representing the good people of Enugu East/Isi Uzo Federal Constituency.

There is no house session that held without the erudite Professor making news both in notable national news media and in social media. It is now as if the entire membership of the lower chamber of National Assembly only sit to listen to Prof. Sunday Nnamchi. He has presented bills upon bills all geared towards the welfare of his constituency, his state and the country in general.

The people that sent this University of Nigeria Professor to the National Assembly have done alot of favour to Enugu State and Nigeria at large. Imagine what the tenth Assembly would have been without the likes of Prof Nnamchi. It is therefore not surprising that institutions are falling upon themselves to have this ebullient Rep member identified with them.

We the people of Enugu East/Isi Uzo Federal Constituency are as usual and as always uplifted by the news that our own Prof. Paul Sunday Nnamchi was the choice of the Nigeria security top brass comprising of people from the rank of Directors of DSS, National Intelligence Agency NIA, Defence Intelligence Agency DIA, and other high military officers at the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS) Abuja on Wednesday the 23rd April 2024 as the guest lecturer during their their Strategic courses.

We therefore congratulate our man for proving to be a National asset and our people for discovering such a hidden treasure during the 2023 general election.

R. Kelly, the Grammy Award-winning R&B singer, has lost his bid to quash a 20-year jail sentence for child sex attacks in Chicago. The federal appeals court’s decision to uphold the conviction and sentence was based on a thorough review of the case, including the arguments made by Kelly’s legal team and the evidence presented during the trial.

Kelly, born Robert Sylvester Kelly, was convicted in 2022 on three charges of producing child porn and three charges of enticement of minors for sex. His legal team argued that the statute of limitations for child sex prosecutions in Illinois, which was shorter and had expired, should have applied to his case. They also contended that charges involving one accuser should have been separated from those involving three other accusers due to video evidence that was central to the trial.

The appeals court, however, rejected Kelly’s arguments. It noted that jurors acquitted Kelly on seven of the thirteen counts against him, even after viewing the video evidence that was presented during the trial. This evidence showed Kelly allegedly abusing a girl, with the accuser, identified only as Jane, testifying for the first time that she was 14 when the video was taken.

Furthermore, the court dismissed Kelly’s claim that he should not have been prosecuted since the allegations occurred while Illinois law required prosecution of child sex crime charges within ten years. The panel labeled this argument as an attempt by Kelly to evade charges after employing a complex scheme to keep victims quiet.

Despite the court’s decision, Kelly’s attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, stated that they plan to seek U.S. Supreme Court review of the decision and continue pursuing all appellate remedies until Kelly is freed. She expressed disappointment in the ruling but emphasized that their fight is far from over.

Additionally, prosecutors in Chicago had sought an even tougher sentence of 25 years for Kelly, and they wanted the 20-year sentence from the Chicago case to be served simultaneously with the 30-year sentence imposed in 2022 in New York for federal racketeering and sex trafficking convictions. However, Judge Harry Leinenweber rejected this request, ordering Kelly to serve the 20-year sentence from the Chicago case first.

> The Nigerian military has closed its camp and withdrawn troops in Allawa community in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State following the recent killing of four soldiers and two officers by bandits. 

Allawa community is one of the communities facing severe attacks by bandits and terrorists in Shiroro LGA.

According to the Daily Trust, the withdrawal of troops, which residents said came to them as a surprise due to renewed attacks in the community and its neighbouring communities, had caused hundreds of locals including women, the elderly and children to vacate their houses, trekking at least 50 kilometres to safe places. 

Residents told the publication that they woke up on Thursday seeing the soldiers removing their tents in preparation to leave the community.

One of the locals, who preferred anonymity, said that the withdrawal came two days after the military vehicle stepped on a landmine along the Allawa-Pandogari road, leading to an unspecified number of casualties.

“I don’t know if you were aware that on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, the military personnel on their way to Allawa stepped on an IED and causalities including death were recorded. Some of them are in the hospital. The incident happened on Allawa-pandogari road Tuesday,” he said.

The Tuesday incident came less than a week after six soldiers and a vigilante lost their lives in an ambush at Roro when bandits launched multiple attacks on Roro, Karaga, Rumace and other farming communities.

Another resident, Mallam Yahuza Allawa, said that dozens of residents had vacated their communities as early as 4am on foot and were heading towards Erena, Gwada, Kuta or Zumba for safety.

“This is a serious issue. Please help us report this issue. We are leaving our communities now and there are insufficient motorcycles and vehicles to take us out as quick as possible. We are afraid. Maybe if you report it, the government will bring vehicles to evacuate us to safe places. Our belongings are there, we can’t pack them,” he said.

“Wallah, hundreds of us have left our communities already. We cannot take Pandogari Road because it is not safe. So, we are moving to either Erena, Gwada, Kuta or Zumba. And from Allawa to Erena which is the only exit road for us is at least 42km and we are trekking because there are no vehicles to convey us. We have old people among us. Many people left their homes as early as 4am before early morning prayers. We cannot wait to be killed by these heartless bandits and Boko Haram."

He said the fleeing farmers have hundreds of goats and other domestic animals and other valuables, including foodstuffs that they were not able to evacuate due to a lack of vehicles. 

He said Allawa and adjoining communities had relied on the presence of the military for protection, saying that the withdrawal came as a surprise to them

Recall that recently, dozens of goats and bags of foodstuffs as well as houses and motorcycles were burnt down during attacks on Allawa, Bassa and adjoining communities by bandits

Residents believed that the attackers were members of Boko Haram and ISWAP due to their firepower.

With the withdrawal, residents said they had become more vulnerable to attacks, forcing them to vacate their communities

The Niger State Commissioner for Homeland Security, Brigadier General Bello Abdullahi Mohammed (RTD) who confirmed the withdrawal of the troops to the Daily Trust said it was part of the arrangements by the military to re-strategise on best ways to tackle insecurity.

> Bandits have killed four persons and abducted six persons in simultaneous attacks on Zurmi and Maru Local Government Areas of Zamfara State.

It was gathered that the gunmen besieged Zurmi town, the headquarters of Zurmi local government area, where they attempted to forcefully gain entry into the palace of an Emir.

A resident of the area, Musa Mande told Leadership that the bandits opened fire on the palace of the traditional ruler as well as the neighbouring residence belonging to the former military administrator of Nasarawa State, Col. Bala Mande (Rtd).

He further hinted that the Emir was evacuated to Gusau, the state capital by security agents for his safety.

According to him, the bandits killed three persons and abducted three other persons during the incident.

He also stated that the bandits set the MTN mast at the place on fire, destroying all associated network boosting equipment at the facility during the attack

Similarly, bandits also attacked Maru town, the headquarters of Maru local government council where they killed one person and kidnapped three others.

According to one Musa Ibrahim Maru, the bandits besieged the town around 11:00 pm Wednesday night and operated for more than two hours.

"The bandits ransacked the town for over two hours. As I am speaking to you now, many residents mainly women and children have fled the town for their safety”, he added.

President Tinubu Could Help Nyesom Wike With The Control Of PDP, But.......

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has documented a notice of withdrawal to end an appeal against an order of a Kogi High Court restraining it from apprehending the previous Lead Representative of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.

In the notice documented on April 22, the EFCC said the withdrawal is predicated on the fact that happenings have overtaken the appeal.

The commission additionally concedes that the appeal was filed out of the time permitted by law.

“The appellant herein intends to and do hereby wholly withdraw her appeal against the respondent in the above-mentioned appeal,” the notice partly read.

“This notice of withdrawal is predicated on the fact that on the 17th of April 2024, the application filed by the appellant herein was overtaken by the decision of the same high court of Kogi State.

“The orders made ex parte by Jamil on the 9th of February 2024 in said suit which is the subject of this appeal, was made to last pending the hearing and determination of the originating motion on notice which was finally determined by Jamil on the 17th April 2024.

“Furthermore, the notice of appeal was filed out of time and we, therefore, pray that the appeal be struck out for being filed out of time and incompetent.”

The EFCC is prosecuting Bello on 19 counts verging on supposed money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of funds to the tune of N80.2 billion. The case is before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

EFCC chief Ola Olukoyede, who promised to arraign Bello or resign, affirmed that the beset ex-Lead Representative pulled out $720,000 from the state’s accounts to pay his child’s school fees in ahead of time not long before he left office on January 27, 2024.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been erroneously quoted as saying that a new minimum wage of N70,000 had been announced. This is wrong. Mr. Governor never said so. He said since January, civil servants had been earning the N35,000 wage award directed by the Federal Government. In other words, those earning N35,000 now earn N70,000. He did not announce a new minimum wage of N70,000.

His words: “I know that by the grace of God very very soon we'll see a new minimum wage that will be approved for the Federal Government and for the state government

The civil servants and all public officers, they know that since January we have continued to pay the wage allowance of minimum of N35,000 over and above what they were earning before.

“People that were earning a minimum of N35,000 to N40,000 before, they are now earning over N70,000. So, it’s important for people to know and for us to lay this thing very clearly. This government has doubled up and has not left its citizens on their own…”.

> Yesterday, in responding to me, Peter Obi told another lamba when he claimed that schools were not on strike under his administration. Please fact-check me: Under Peter Obi, Anambra schools were on strike for seven months because Peter Obi refused to pay Anambra teachers minimum wage. 

This is the same then Governor, who had $30 million to invest in a $50 million beer brewery. But he could not find $3 million to pay teachers minimum wage. And when they protested, he threatened to sack them.

This is the man now criticising Tinubu for not increasing workers' pay and instead increasing their suffering. 

Not only did he not build schools throughout his eight year tenure, he also threatened to fire teachers employed by his predecessors.

The Edo State Government has doled out cash rewards to the State’s female football team, Edo Queens for clinching a spot in the Super Six tournament after finishing second in Group B of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL).

The Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, during a reception organized to celebrate Edo Queens at the New Festival Hall, Government House in Benin City, disclosed the cash reward of N5 million to the team, commending them for their indomitable spirit and commitment to excellence.

Charging the team to continue on their impressive run at the Super 6 Tournament so as to secure a ticket for the continental championship, the first lady said, “I congratulate you and encourage you to do more and make us happy and proud.”

Commending the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration for its commitment to sports development, she noted that “Sports is a serious business and the Edo State Government has hugely invested in it.

“In the past seven years, Governor Obaseki has reinvigorated sports in Edo State. It's only a visionary government that can revive sports and Obaseki did it. Edo State is no longer number one in human trafficking as our government has invested in sports to encourage our youths.

“Edo Queens and Bendel Insurance are now tops in the football league in the Country and the both clubs are doing well based on the commitment of the Edo State Government's investment in sports.”

The First Lady stated, “The Betsy Obaseki Football Tournament has helped our girls achieve so much thus far. I am happy and pray for the progress and success of the girls in the Super Six Tournament.”

She expressed confidence that the team will bring the Super Six laurel home to Edo State.

While congratulating the team, the Edo State Deputy Governor, Omobayo Marvelous Godwins said, “I congratulate the team for the achievement. I thank you for this great achievement of playing in the Super 6 Tournament.
