> The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has disclosed that a father has been arrested alongside his son by the police for impersonating his son during the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, who disclosed this while on an inspection tour of the UTME centres in Kaduna on Wednesday, April 24, said the 2024 examination is largely well conducted, except for a few cases of impersonation, which became possible because some people now have multiple National Identity Number (NIN).

Prof. Oloyede warned that those who cheated in the exams will be arrested either now or much later after the examination, saying that JAMB has improved its technology to check those engaging in all forms of examination malpractices.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the inspection at Kaduna State University (KASU) CBT Centre, the JAMB Registrar said: “For those who engage in cheating, they should know that it does not pay. The technology is helping to check that.

“Across the country, most of the problem we have is impersonation. For instance, now, we say we have NIN, we now have cases of people with two NINs and therefore, that has defeated the purpose of identity verification. We are going to take that up with NIMC, that there are people who have two NINs.

“We have a case of a father impersonating his son, writing an examination for the son and I wonder, are you not destroying your son’s future? Of course, two of them are now in custody. I can’t understand what the father will now tell his son when they are both locked up in the same cell. This happened not in Kaduna, but I don’t want to disclose the state.

There is hardly any village. Mark the word "Village" not town that doesn't have a primary school and a secondary school in the East. So if every village has a primary school and a secondary school before the time of Obi, where would he had built a school from scratch?

For the record, most of the government schools in the East were not built by government. They were built by the villagers.

They are three schools in the east: those built by the village where it is resident, those buildings by the church and those built by the government. The majority are those built by the villages.

Nigeria is largely populated by miseducated graduates and semi educated people because it beats my imagination why we take development to be all about the setting up of structures rather than the setting up of structures in collaboration with adequate policies for the efficiency utilization of those structures.

There is a picture of the recent commissioning of school buildings by the former governor of Abia state now the senator representing Abia north. What did he commission? A single building because there is where you will see a school that you can build from scratch.

Yes! Many schools in the East especially in Abia state have dilapidated structures due to the neglect of the state governments and lack of interest by the host communities due to the entrance of private schools in the system.

So it's ironic to judge the educational system of the igbos from the view point of someone every single school in his state was built and ran by the government.

PTA money in the East was used to build and renovate school buildings. I believe strongly that the idea of PTA funding originated from the Eastern part of Nigeria.

The new generation of Igbo doesn't know that the Igbos started crowd funding. Ninety percent of the school in the East were built by community crowd funding long before Obi became a governor.

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, has vowed to resign as EFCC chairman if embattled former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, is not prosecuted.

In a chat with editors at the EFCC Headquarters, Jabi, Abuja, on Tuesday, the anti-graft agency chairman swore to follow the prosecution of Mr Bello to the logical conclusion.

He also vowed that all those who obstructed the arrest of the former governor would be brought to justice.

The EFCC is seeking to arraign Bello on 19 counts bordering on alleged money laundering, breach of trust and misappropriation of funds to the tune of N80.2 billion.

The agency’s chairman said that no matter what anyone does or the amount of attack against the anti-graft agency, he and his men will not relent in helping to sanitise the country.

Olukoyede noted that the EFCC needs the support of Nigerians to succeed, emphasising that if the agency fails, Nigeria fails. He stated that the efforts made currently have helped the value of the naira and the foreign market.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) head, Ola Olukoyede, reports that in 2022, banks nationwide suffered losses of more than N8 billion due to cyber theft.

During a Tuesday interactive session with media executives in Abuja, Olukoyede delivered a speech.

According to him, cybercrime affected over 71% of Nigerian businesses in 2022. He also stated that the anti-graft agency’s battle against online fraud is aimed at preserving the future of the country.

According to Olukoyede, the commission has established a cybercrime research center where convicted online scammers—referred to as Yahoo Yahoo boys in the community—will receive training on how to apply their skills to better elements of society. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Bobrisky Submits An Appeal Against His Conviction For Financial Misconduct

The Federal Government has revealed that only 20 per cent of the candidates sitting the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) might be offered admission into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across the country.
The government is also contemplating a review of the current age requirement for entry into tertiary institutions in the country, which is likely to be pegged at 18 years.

Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman made the disclosures on Monday in Abuja while monitoring the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), alongside the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof Ishaq Oloyede.

More than 1.9 million candidates registered to participate in the examination that commenced on 19th April and is expected to end on 29th April 2024.

Mamman expressed concerns about about some parents who exert unnecessary pressure on their children, warning them against pushing the children and wards “too much,” to allow them to attain some level of maturity to be able to better manage their affairs.

There have been concerns about the carrying capacity of the existing public tertiary institutions while private institutions always find it difficult to fill their admission quotas because of high tuition fees.

Mamman, while commenting on the high number of candidates seeking admission into the limited slots available in tertiary institutions, said skills acquisition remains a critical component in preparing the youths for a brighter future.
“It is not a question of being employed but how many will be admitted from this set.

I think the figure overall on average is about 20 per cent; universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
“The question you ask is where are the 80 percent? They are our children, our wards living with us.

This is why the issue of skills acquisition is terribly important because any student who is not being able to proceed to tertiary education, should be able to have a meaningful life even after secondary school, even primary education actually.
“The only solution to that is skills; by taking skills right from the time they entered school, for the primary right through the educational trajectory.

Somebody should finish with one skill or another. That is part of the assumption of the 6-3-3-4.
“It is assumed that by the time a student finishes up to the JSS level, he will have acquired some skills. If he does not proceed to the senior secondary level, he will have acquired some skills that will help him navigate life and cease to be a burden on his parents and society.
“That’s why this skill is just the most important skill for us now that we are going to drive through the education sector for both public and private sector to empower the young ones.”

Speaking on the age requirement for intake into tertiary institutions, he said: “The other thing which we notice is the age of those who have applied to go to the university. Some of them are really too young. We are going to look at it because they are too young to understand what a university education is all about.

“That’s the stage when students migrate from a controlled environment where they are in charge of their own affairs. So if they are too young, they won’t be able to manage properly. That accounts for some of the problems we are seeing in the universities.

“We are going to look at that. 18 is the entry age for university but you will see students, 15, and 16, going to the examination. It is not good for us. Parents should be encouraged not to push their wards, or children too much.”

The Minister commended the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for a seamless examination process, noting that the adoption of technology had helped in reducing the cases of examination practices.
“Right from screening to those who are here, the examination process is seamless.

The environment is comfortable for students. That’s how it should be, especially the use of technology in our affairs and the educational system. It makes life easy for everybody and seamless.
“As we know this examination is going on throughout the country.

It is being monitored everywhere seamlessly and from the report I have heard, the malpractice level is very low. Just a 100 out of the 1.2m. It has gone down drastically and I believe that it is the use of technology that has made that happen so this is very good.”

Minister of State for Education, Dr Tanko Sununu, who was excited the UTME was also ongoing in Saudi Arabia as a result of the standards set by JAMB’s management, noted that the examination has transcended to a very high level of objectivity and reliability of results.

“Right from when the candidates arrive, they would be seated comfortably in the waiting room, screening and other necessary instructions will be given and they will proceed to do biometrics.
“There are some instructions that will be pushed that even if you are just coming into contact with a computer for the first time, provided you have been using the handset or smartphone, that will properly guide you to have access.

“One of the major things I see here, which is a major characteristic of online exams, is the speed. The speed in the centre is really excellent; pages are turned as at when candidates need them without any delay of booting.

“Also in the exam, there are lots of steps to prevent examination malpractice, candidates that are adjacent will be taking different subjects and even when you are answering the same questions, question number one will be different from question number two from the next person.
“The standard of the examination is commendable.

I am not surprised that JAMB has to go outside Nigeria to go to other countries to conduct exams, they were in Saudi Arabia and right now the exam is also going (on) in Saudi Arabia.
“I have not heard people complaining of answers leaked, it shows that with online exams we can do a lot.”

Controversial cross-dresser, Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, alias Bobrisky, has appealed against the six months imprisonment imposed on him by the Federal High Court in Lagos which convicted him of charges of abuse of naira.

In the appeal lodged on his behalf by his lawyer, Bimbo Kusanu, Bobrisky wants the Court of Appeal to convert the six-month imprisonment to N50,000 fine on each of the four counts he was convicted of.

Justice Abimbola Awogboro had on April 12, 2024, sentenced Bobrisky, to six months imprisonment without an option fine for abusing the naira by spraying the currency at a party, leading to mutilation.

Bobrisky had on April 5, 2024, pleaded guilty to four counts of abuse of the naira preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The judge while sentencing the cross-dresser, said the judgment would serve as a deterrent to others who are fond of abusing and mutilating the naira.

However, in his Notice of Appeal filed before the Appeal Court, the cross-dresser urged the appellate court to consider the fact that he has no previous record of criminal conviction.

He averred that the sentence imposed by the trial court against him was punitive contrary to the mandatory provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law on sentencing.

He stated that the trial court did not consider the positive antecedent of the appellant, who did not waste the precious judicial resources of the trial court, when he pleaded guilty to the charge.

He also noted that he honoured the invitation of the EFCC on the first invitation during the investigation leading to the charge.

“The sentence of the lower court that imposed the maximum penalty of six months imprisonment without option of fine on the appellant, who is a first-time convict without a previous record of criminal conviction, is harsh.

“The learned trial judge erred in law and facts by his imposition of the maximum sentence of six months imprisonment terms against the appellant without the option of fine contrary to the provisions of Section 416(2) (d) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act of 2015 that prescribed the mandatory guidelines on the trial court on imposition of sentencing after criminal conviction of a first time offender as the appellant.

“The trial court imposed the maximum sentence on the appellant, who has no previous record criminal of conviction, when there are options to impose a lesser sentence by the provisions of the ADCJA.

“The sentence imposed by the trial court against the appellant is punitive contrary to the mandatory provisions of the law on sentencing.

“The appellant has suffered a miscarriage of justice by the maximum sentence imposed by the learned trial court.

“The reasons adduced by the learned trial court for the imposition of maximum punishment on the appellant, which is essentially on what foreigners think of abuse of naira, is perverse and is out of tune with the reality of what the trial court should have been considered to impose maximum punishment on the appellant.

“The intendment of the provisions of the Central Bank Act 2007 that the appellant was charged with is for Nigerians not to tamper with naira and not what nationals of foreign countries view about tampering with naira.

“The trial court did not consider the positive antecedent of the appellant, who did not waste the precious judicial resources of the trial court when he pleaded guilty to the charge. The appellant honoured the invitation of the respondent, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on the first invitation during the investigation leading to the charge.

“The trial court failed to exercise his discretion judiciously and judicially in sentencing the appellant which has occasioned a miscarriage of justice against the appellant.”

More than 300 accounts connected to illegal foreign exchange (FX) transactions have been frozen by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The EFCC’s chairman, Ola Olukoyede, stated in interactive session with media executives in Abuja on Tuesday that the organisation had obtained a court order to freeze the accounts.

“We got an order to freeze those accounts imagine what would have happened if we didn’t seize those accounts,” he said.

The anti-graft chairman said that one of the illicit accounts had up to N50 billion.

The scheme popularly called the “P to P” peer- peer financial trading scheme has operated outside the official banking and financial corridors and there was a looming disaster that could further crashed the Naira value that has continued to gain.

“There are people in this country doing worse than Binance,” he said.

He added that over $15bn passed through one of the platforms in the last one year, outside the financial regulations.

In the very beginning, there was only one Christian World, the Catholic Church until....

1. MARTIN LUTHER AND THE BEGINNING OF PROTESTANTISM.

In the year 1517 AD, the Reverend Martin Luther, a former Catholic priest rose up against the Catholic Church alleging immorality within the ranks of the clergy. 
He taught that man if he had faith could be saved despite his wickedness and that good works were of no consequences. 
By 1520, he had arrived at the conclusion that every baptized Christian was a priest, that Rome was Babylon, that the pope was Anti-Christ, that priests should be allowed to marry, and that divorce was lawful.

He founded a new Church that bore his own name; the Lutheran Church or the Church of Luther.
As the protestant Reformation developed in Germany, it broke into several other factions In Switzerland, for example, a fiction named Reformed Christianity developed following the teachings of two men Ulrich Zwingli ind John Calvin both who emphasized the doctrine of Predestination that some are pre ordained to eternal life and others to eternal damnation.

2. THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 

These teachings got to Scotland in 1560 through the activities of a former Catholic who went by the name John Knox! There it took the name the Presbyterian Church.

From the same Switzerland came another group- the Anabaptist which had developed in 1521 following the ideas of Petr Chelcicky the Bohemian.

In 1536, an Anabaptist group broke away to follow another leader, a former Catholic Priest named Menno Simmons from where the Church took the name Mennonites. Later in 1693, Jacob Amman, a Mennonite elder led a revolt against the Mennonite Church resulting in the formation of a new Church that bore his name even to this day: the Amish Church. 

4. BAPTIST CHURCH 

In 1609, a new Church by the name Baptist Church started in Amsterdam based on the preaching of the English separatist John Smyth.

5. ANGLICANS

Along the same line of opposition to the Catholic Church came the Anglican Church which started in 1533 AD when the Catholic Church refused to grant England's King Henry VIII the dissolution of his marriage. This Church became the Episcopal Church when it got to the United States of America in 1789.

6. AFRICAN CHURCH 

In Nigeria, a schism within the same Anglican Church gave birth to the African Church.

6. METHODIST CHURCH 

Early in the 1740s, a group of Anglicans parted ways with their Church to start another Church which took the name the Methodist Church. This group followed the teachings of John Wesley and his brother Charles.

7. Disciples of Jesus 

In the late 1800s, an attempt to return to what was regarded Primitive Christianity led to the formation of a new movement called the Disciples of Jesus by Thomas Campbell, his son Alexander and Barton W. Stone all former Presbyterian ministers from Ireland.

8. CHURCH OF CHRIST

About the year 1906, a disagreement over the scriptural authorization for organized mission societies and the use or otherwise of musical instruments in worship, among other irreconcilable differences led to the separation from the Disciples of Jesus of a group which later identified itself as The Church of Christ.

Every man believes that he is being guided by the Holy Spirit and plenty Churches sprang up.
The 1960s saw the emergence of a new group of highly fragmented preachers called the Pentecostals who saw nothing good in the earlier protestant factions.

Though individually, these groups, with their two-pronged gospel that centers on miracles and material possession, are never in agreement, yet collectively they hold the Catholic Church as a common enemy that must be destroyed at all cost and so much energy and resources have been committed to ensure the achievement of this set goal. 
This includes not only the massive use of both the print and the electronic media, but also the organization of special religious programs, out- reaches as well as door-to-door preaching, all directed at bringing down the Catholic Church but to no avail.

The opponents of the Catholic Church have never been able to deem the light of the Church, for the Church of Jesus Christ continues to march on, century after century, without distraction despite the human failings of her leaders and the flock. Upon you Peter.....

Obaseki insists on ban on open grazing, urges stakeholders’ support to ensure a secure, prosperous Edo

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the ban on open grazing in the State still remains, warning that anyone found wanting will be made to face the full wrath of the law.

The governor said this while addressing stakeholders during an interactive session on the Edo State Regional Development and Benin City Master Plan, held at Iguobazuwa, Ovia South-West Local Government Area of the State.

Obaseki who reassured the government’s commitment to the safety and security of residents, called for the collaboration and support of all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful, secure and prosperous Edo State.

He said, “Any herdsman in our bush without permission is working against the law of our State, and anything that happens, they can't blame anyone.

“Let us be sure that nobody gives that person the permission to enter our forest and if permission will be granted, let us know the type of permission given to them to come into our bushes or forest to graze with their cattle.

“Open grazing is banned in Edo State. If they are in your forest, let us know where they are because we have police and vigilantes who will help us get them out through a number we will give you to call.”

Obaseki added, “Anybody that wants to do ranching business should contact you, the community people and you will decide on the land to use and method of feeding their cattle. They should do the business with you and not invade our forest indiscriminately as if there are no owners. The forest and bushes belong us.”
