The incumbent Governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo, has visited the embattled former governor of the state, Yahaya Bello, amidst a heavy security crackdown on the latter’s Abuja home.

Ododo arrived at Bello’s residence at about 2:30 pm Wednesday, alongside several security operatives and youth supporters protesting against the siege to the former governor’s home.

Our correspondent, who visited the residence Wednesday afternoon, observed the heavy presence of armed operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, policemen, operatives of the Department of State Security, Counter Terrorism Unit, and Yahaya Bello’s private security team.

EFCC operatives had on Wednesday morning stormed Bello’s Abuja home located in Wuse Zone 4, Federal Capital Territory.

Photographs seen by our correspondent on Wednesday show some armed EFCC personnel laying siege to the ex-governor’s home on Benghazi Street, Wuse Zone 4, Abuja.

As of press time, our correspondent could not independently confirm the reason behind the siege on Bello’s home as the spokesperson for the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, did not respond to inquiries concerning the development.

However, the EFCC had earlier dragged Yahaya Bello, his nephew Ali, one Dauda Sulaiman, and Abdulsalam Hudu before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, in an amended charge in March 2024 over an alleged N84bn money laundering.

Reacting to the development, the ex-governor’s media office, in a statement, condemned the operatives’ actions while urging President Bola Tinubu to caution the EFCC.

According to the statement, the presence of the operatives in Bello’s residence negated the order of injunction granted on February 9, 2024, by the High Court of Justice, Lokoja Division, in Suit No. HCL/68M/2024 between Yahaya Bello v. EFCC, restraining the commission either by itself or its agents from harassing, arresting, detaining, or prosecuting him, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive fundamental rights enforcement action.

The Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General of Rivers State, Prof. Zacchaeus Adangor, has refused to accept his redeployment as part of a cabinet reshuffle initiated by the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, amid the ongoing crisis in Rivers. 

Adangor conveyed his decision to reject the redeployment and also tendered his resignation from the State Executive Council in a letter addressed to the Secretary to Rivers State Government (SSG), Tammy Danagogo. 

Governor Fubara had instructed through the SSG's office the transfer of Adangor to the Ministry of Special Duties (Governor’s Office) and the commissioner for finance, Isaac Kamalu, to the Ministry of Employment Generation and Economic Empowerment, with immediate effect.

The governor requested both officials to hand over their responsibilities to the permanent secretaries of their respective ministries. 

However, Adangor expressed in his letter of rejection and resignation that he was no longer willing to serve under Fubara's administration in any capacity due to alleged interference in his role as the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice. 

Adangor highlighted that Governor Fubara had recently obstructed his duties by instructing him not to participate in legal proceedings against the Attorney-General's office and the Rivers Government, which were initiated by individuals supported by the state government.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has reacted to reports of a Court order allegedly stopping them from arresting an embattled former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.

Below is the statement made available to POLITICS NIGERIA on Monday;

“Against the backdrop of arguments and counter-arguments on whether the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has disobeyed a court order concerning the botched arrest of former governor of Kogi State, Mr. Yahaya Adoza Bello, the Commission has denied disobeying any court order in this regard.”

“In a Statement signed by the EFCC’s Acting Director, Public Affairs, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, the Commission clearly pointed out that though Bello sought refuge in a fundamental rights enforcement action through an order granted by Justice Isa Jamil Abdulallahi of the Kogi State High Court, the order did not vitiate or nullify an order made by the Federal High Court for the arrest of the former governor for the purpose of his arraignment.”

“The enrolled Order of the Kogi State High Court only granted an order to enforce Bello’s right to personal liberty and freedom of movement, it didn’t preclude the Federal High Court ‘to make any Order as it may deem just in the determination of the rights of the Applicant and the Respondent as may be submitted to her for consideration and determination”

“The Order made by the Federal High Court for the arrest of Mr. Yahaya Bello for the purpose of his arraignment is not in conflict with the Order of the Kogi State High Court. The case before the Federal High Court is a criminal charge which is different from the fundamental rights enforcement action that is the subject of an appeal”

Uwujaren pointed out that the EFCC had a shining track record in the prosecution of politically exposed persons and would continue to exercise its mandate in the overall interest of the nation. He admonished Bello to turn himself in and answer to the charges preferred against him by the Commission.

He called on all patriotic Nigerians to lend their voices in support of the Commission stressing that ” the EFCC will not relent in its quest to wrestle corruption to the ground”.

Everyone and their mama is always quick to condescend kogi state,as the worst state in Nigeria.

Many say lokoja is the worst state capital in Nigeria.

The line they always use is that, " just drive through kogi state you will see poverty"

Except for the state of roads which a lot of them are federal roads,there's no significant difference between kogi state and most states in Nigeria, except that the capital lokoja is small.The part of lokoja most people drive through that looks particularly shabby is the outskirts mostly populated by Hausa settlers,this confuses people to think that is how the whole state looks like.

Another significant factor many do not consider is that kogi state hasn't historically had very prominent politicians ( not the loud mouths) that have occupied significant positions in Nigeria. I mean Benue had David mark for 9years as senate President.

How many prominent ministers have been from kogi state? Over the years that could have influenced federal government intervention in the state?

Many states are enjoying significant intervention by federal government. Eg the abuja- markudi road,loko- oweto bridge etc.

The okene- lokoja- Abuja road was abandoned by FG for many years.

Furthermore, many states enjoy global agencies intervention eg world bank intervention and NGO intervention and private companies. They all prefer to do such in core northern states or in the south.
There's hardly any of such in kogi.

Consider how a man like Peter obi donated millions to many northern states.
There's hardly such donations in kogi.

Despite all these Kogi state ranks high in many HDIs in Nigeria and manage to maintain relative security.

I do not exonerate successive governors and representatives of the state.

But sincerely kogi state is really neglected in Nigeria yet people turn around to mock it at every turn.

Yoruba organized themselves , encouraged and supported the soldiers to invade the venue of the so called declaration and arrested all them and successfully seized their guns, ammunitions , military uniforms, weapons, Matchets, charms and destroyed Onitiri Abiola’s home etc.

No single very important Yoruba men and women rose to defend the bandits rather they told them that their horrible mission is not Yoruba agenda. Totally the Yoruba Nation rose to the occasion and rebuked them in no uncertain terms. Yoruba Nation left a monumental lessons for my tribe. How I wished that leaders in Igboland metted the same response to IPOB, UGM and ESN when they seized South East destroyed all the things we hold dear, killed our people in their thousands, destroyed and burnt their homes, killed police men and soldiers,stole our people to bones, gang-rapped our wives and daughters, snatched many our wives and daughters to become their wives, looted our markets and extorted money from our wealthy men and women that ran into billions. They committed unquantified atrocities in Igbo land. 

My advice: please learn from the Yoruba Nation. They did not go to war when their prominent son, Chief MKO Abiola won the Presidential elections in 1993 and they Killed him, killed his wife and destroyed all his businesses. They appplied common sense, wisdom and tact . They did not want any further tragedy to befall their people , the did not want their pride, Lagos to be destroyed, they lost many of their people in the struggle for Abiola’s Mandate. They sacrificed a lot but God rewarded them abundantly. Obasanjo became president for 8 yrs. Prof Osibanjo became Vice President for 8 yrs and today we have President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the saddle and he will rule for 8 years. Wisdom is always profitable for any decent nation or tribe. Good evening Nigerians.

Nigerian bankers colluded with government officials to re-loot recovered Abacha loot: EFCC

“Managing directors of the indicted banks have made useful statements to investigators digging into the infractions.’’

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has accused commercial banks of colluding with government officials to re-loot recovered loot of the late dictator, Sani Abacha. 

In December 2017, the Federal Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Switzerland on the return and monitoring of the $322 million Abacha loot.

The proceeds were intended for Conditional Cash Transfer under the Social Investment Programme which began in December 2016, under ex-president Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

The looted funds were meant to provide N5,000 monthly stipends to the most vulnerable Nigerians across the country. 

However, on Sunday, a spokesperson for the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, in a statement, said that the anti-graft agency opened investigations into other alleged financial malpractices from the ministry; involving the COVID-19 funds and the World Bank- assisted loan coordinated by the Humanitarian Ministry to assist poor Nigerians.

The EFCC said, “Discreet investigations by the EFCC have opened other fraudulent dealings involving COVID -19 funds, the World Bank loan, Abacha recovered loot released to the ministry by the Federal Government to execute its poverty alleviation mandate. Investigations have also linked several interdicted and suspended officials of the ministry to the alleged financial malfeasance. 

“It is instructive to stress that the commission’s investigations are not about individuals. The EFCC is investigating a system and intricate web of fraudulent practices. Banks involved in the alleged fraud are being investigated. Managing directors of the indicted banks have made useful statements to investigators digging into the infractions. Those found wanting will be prosecuted accordingly. Additionally, the EFCC has not cleared anyone allegedly involved in the fraud. Investigations are ongoing and advancing steadily. The public is enjoined to ignore any claim to the contrary.’’ 

The commission also revealed that N32.7 billion and $445,000 had been recovered from both past and suspended officials of the humanitarian ministry.

It added that the commission initiated investigations into the affairs of the humanitarian ministry inviting former minister, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, and her successor, Beta Edu, suspended by President Bola Tinubu in January for alleged abuse of office.
